Clinical Teaching

I currently teach 5 days per week in the third year curriculum as Service Chief of Community Veterinary Services (CVS) and as the director of the small animal dental program. CVS receives emergency cases for the other services during the normal work-day as well as receives general “private practice” cases via drop-offs and exam room appointments.

CVM 5246 Community Veterinary Services (CVS) Rotation

2004-present

I began serving as the Service Chief of CVS in January 2013. As such, I coordinate scheduling of morning rounds, The “Lunch and Learn” series, Communications training as well as other special teaching sessions. I coordinate the student experiences in the other services within the CVS rotation including Dermatology, Shelter Medicine, and Dentistry.

CVS receives emergency cases for the other services during the normal work-day as well as receives general “private practice” cases via drop-offs and exam room appointments. Approximately twelve 3rd year veterinary students are on the rotation as well as 3-6 veterinary technology students at any one time. The inpatient and outpatient cases provide interaction with the students and one-on-one teaching opportunities.

I see all of the dental cases, routine and referral. This provides a platform for clinical teaching. (250-300 dental cases per year including first opinion and referral cases)

Laboratory instruction: As a part of CVS, I teach an extraction lab every 6 weeks to the students on the rotation. (3hr)

DIS/ACR students. Each year, I have several students that elect to take a Directed Individual Study or an Advanced Clinical Rotation in either Dentistry or CVS. These 4th year students function as doctors under my direct supervision.

Undergraduate curriculum

CVM 3201 Small Animal Dentistry for Veterinary Technologists, 2 hr, elective

March 2012
