Overview

Kids have a wonderful imagination and usually can always think 'outside the box'. In this activity the students will prepare a fact file of a young inventor.

Students can access all the Internet sites for the Interactive Activities by clicking on Students' Area in the ECB On-line homepage, then click on:

• Interactive Activity links - The links to the Internet sites are listed under the names of the activities.

Procedure

Ask the students:

1. Have you ever had an idea for an invention?

2. What was its purpose?

3. Why did you think this invention would be important?

4. Who would benefit from the invention?

5. What were you doing at the time that you thought about the need for the invention?

Discuss why it may be easier for young people to come up with new ideas for inventions.

Show the class some examples of kid's inventions from:

Kid Inventors and their amazing inventions (links in which you'll have to choose – some are real and some are from children's imagination)

Kid Inventors

Give the students: Kids Invent Activity. The students will prepare a fact file of a young inventor.

The fact file should include:

• information about the inventor

• the purpose of the invention

• an explanation how this invention will help

• Optional information: a diagram of the invention, additional inventions by the inventor.

Presentation

1. The students present their fact file to the class.

2. The students present a fact file of an invention they thought of. They can use the Kids Invent Activity worksheet as a guide. The fact file should include the purpose of the invention, who would benefit from this invention, a diagram of the invention and list of materials needed to build it.
