High Life

For all Delta people who have truly touched the High Life/

Dear PCN,

Group Section……

Mark’s Remarks:

Thanksgiving: This day was very enjoyable at our home. Kids and grandkids were here and a 22 # turkey with all the trimmings. Life has presented a lot of things during the last few years that have given everyone of us a curve or two. But Thanksgiving is such a neat day and time of year to pause around those things that we are thankful for. I hope you had a great day!

PCN Services: If you read the header you will see in there the line of services what the PCN attempts to provide. Some are glad all are available, others can take of leave ‘em. Why I mention this, is that we cannot assign which notices you get. We send out every notice to our entire group. If you would like to limit your notices, the job is a rather simple one at your end. We carefully use certain email addresses for certain notices and also key words in the subject line. This is intentional. Any of our subscribers can easily set a filter at their email client to receive all or reject some of out notices. I encourage you to customize the notices you wish to receive. Thanks.

++++++++++

Trouble receiving: The above paragraph brings me to this point of trouble getting our notices. If you are one experiencing trouble, please email me and we will get to the bottom of it. mark@

++++++++++

New Managers: I wish to thank again Carol Ann Faulkner, Kim Frey and David Roberts for stepping up to volunteer for a role with the PCN. This network can only be better with more hands involved. There is still room for volunteers. Should you have a little extra time on your hands and wish to help out, send in your name and we’ll find a job for ya. Thanks Mark.

Mark’s Tidbits:

Merge Google Calendars? Hey you gmailers! If you login to your gmail account you will notice a free calendar in upper left of page. Would you like to see a nice feature? Load the calendar. Give it a title like “Mark’s Personal” Calendar, then scroll down to “Other Calendars” and click ADD. That will open a page that you can add US Holidays and Sports Teams, etc. On the right side of that page is “Add a Friends Calendar”. If you click that and add this email: pcn.calendar@ you will now have the PCN calendar merged with your gmail calendar. Want to hear something neat. With my Droid cell phone that calendar is always in view and up to date on my cell phone. Geez……I love this kind of stuff!

Delta shows its love for NYC

‘We want to be the No. 1 carrier in New York.’Its dual-hub strategy for JFK, LaGuardia consumes resources.

By Kelly Yamanouchi

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Sunday, November 29, 2009

In Atlanta, Delta Air Lines has grown comfortable in its decades-long marriage with the city. But in New York, Delta has become a perennial suitor, passionately trying to win over travelers from rivals like American, Continental and US Airways.

“Delta calls New York home,” reads one of the Atlanta-based airline’s latest New York advertisements. “We’re more than NY’s most global airline; we’re New Yorkers.”

FAA transcripts show efforts to reach Flight 188

FAA transcripts show controllers trying to reach Northwest flight that overflew Minneapolis

• By Joshua Freed, AP Airlines Writer

• On 6:33 pm EST, Friday November 27, 2009

After a Northwest Airlines plane flew past Minneapolis last month, air traffic controllers asked the pilots repeatedly for explanations about why they didn't heed radio calls, according to transcripts released on Friday.

The Oct. 21 flight had been out of contact for 77 minutes before the pilots responded. The pilots told controllers right away that they had been distracted, but didn't give details, according to the transcript of their radio conversations released by the Federal Aviation Administration.

After almost 90 seconds of conversation about the route they should take to Minneapolis, the controllers said, "I just have to verify that the cockpit is secure."

"It is secure, we got distracted," one of the pilots responded. The transcript says the pilot then said that they never heard a call from the ground.

A different controller took over and, after five more minutes of directions about routes and altitudes, asked, "Do you have time to give a brief explanation on what happened?"

Delta seeking to raise more than $688M in offering

Delta Air Lines seeking to raise more than $688 million in debt offering

• On 4:05 pm EST, Tuesday November 24, 2009

ATLANTA (AP) -- Delta Air Lines Inc. is seeking to raise more than $688 million by selling notes backed by aircraft it owns.

Delta expects to use the proceeds from the issuance of the notes to refinance 22 aircraft currently supporting other debt and to prepay its obligations under financings for five aircraft delivered this year. Any money left over will be used to pay fees and expenses related to the offering and for general corporate purposes, Delta said.

The world's biggest airline said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Tuesday that it entered into an underwriting agreement with Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley in connection with the issuance and sale of the so-called pass-through certificates.

The issuance is for $568,796,000 of Class A certificates with an interest rate of 7.75 percent per annum and $119,944,000 of Class B certificates with an interest rate of 9.75 percent per annum.

The debt will be secured by 27 Boeing aircraft owned by Delta, which is based in Atlanta.

Delta lands OK on Zagat airline survey

Atlanta Business Chronicle

Fliers’ reviews of Delta Air Lines Inc. were mixed, according to Zagat’s 2009 Airline Survey released Tuesday.

The survey covered 16 domestic and 73 international airlines. Each airline was rated on Zagat's 30-point scale on its premium and economy class service for both domestic and international flights. The airlines were rated on four aspects of their performance: comfort, service, food and Web site. Other issues such as value, on-time performance, luggage policy and in-flight entertainment were also covered.

In the Large Domestic Premium Class category, Atlanta-based Delta (NYSE: DAL) scored a 17, tying for second place with American Airlines and behind first place Continental Airlines, which scored a 21.

Trying to Understand Airline Executive Compensation

by: Robert Herbst November 23, 2009

In 2008, while the 5 remaining legacy airlines lost a cumulative $4.6 billion (excludes special charges), the 25 top executives collectively received over $90 million in compensation, averaging over $3.6 million per executive.

The legacy airlines are: American (AMR), Delta (DAL), United (UAUA), Continental (CAL) and US Airways (LCC).

So, while upper management did rather well, how did the other stake holders come out?

• In just one year, these 5 legacy carriers lost an incredible $17 billion of stock-holder equity as their cumulative market cap dropped from $21.9 billion to only $5 billion.

• 6,300 jobs were eliminated in 2008.

• The average annual wage per employee was $57,000 and unchanged from a decade ago.

I guess we could use our imagination to estimate how much executive compensation would increase if the airlines actually made money?

The Time To Buy US Based Airline Stocks Is Now Says Award Winning Equity Analyst – Really? Mark

• On 5:14 pm EST, Monday November 23, 2009

67 WALL STREET, New York - November 23, 2009 -

TWST: Let's start with your overall outlook for the airline industry today. What is your outlook and why?

Ms. Becker: We think that the airlines have seen the bottom or are in the process of bottoming, and our outlook for the third quarter is for an aggregate total of about $30 billion in revenue, and operating profit of about $600 million and a net loss of about $400 million. Obviously, all numbers exclude non-recurring gains, charges and mark-to-market hedge-related gains and losses. The revenue estimate is for a decline of about 8%. That compares to our initial estimate earlier in the year that revenues would be down between 7% and 9%. I think that the fourth quarter should show a little bit of improvement versus the third quarter and versus last year. We're thinking the fourth quarter will be low single digits, so down 3% to 7%. And then 2010 we think will be better.

TWST: So perhaps the worst is behind us?

Ms. Becker: We think the worst is behind us.

Editor: I am questioning Ms. Becker’s analysis. My money will be more cautious.

New online site spotlights benefits changes for 2010

November 23, 2009

A new online site created by Human Resources will make it easier to keep track of benefits changes that go into effect next year.

The new DeltaNet site – Looking Ahead in 2010 – provides a summary of changes coming in January and the applicable audience for each topic. The topics include absence plans and time off benefits, new healthcare administrators, retirement process changes and payroll conversion.

Beside each item is a color-coded chart that makes it easy to see at a glance what employee groups are affected by which benefit or change. Each item also includes a link to more information located on Employee Connection.

“This great new resource spotlights the many employee benefits Delta has introduced during the past year as part of the merger integration,” said Rob Kight, v.p.-Compensation, Benefits and Services. “This site will help remind employees about what might be first-time programs or processes for many of them, particularly pre-merger Northwest employees.”

The site flags benefits and other programs that may require individual employee action, such as full-time student verification for benefits coverage and updating personal information online. The chart is not all-inclusive but contains a summary of most of the benefits and programs that are likely to involve the largest number of employees.

Some benefits and privileges changed this year, such as pass travel, adoption reimbursement and others. In January more progress will be made to integrate the work forces.

For pre-merger Northwest employees where representation issues have been resolved, the remaining transition to most of Delta’s benefits and policies will take place in January. Pre-merger Delta employees also will experience changes to some processes. For pre-merger Northwest employees where representation has not been resolved, there will be few benefits changes in January, though some processes will be affected.

In conjunction with the benefits transition, paychecks for active employees have been redesigned to include more details on pay stubs. Active pre-merger Delta employees will receive the redesigned paychecks next month. Pre-merger Northwest employees will receive the new paychecks starting in January. The only thing changing with this redesign is the look and where information is displayed on the paycheck stub. Base pay rates are not changing. The retiree and survivor paycheck design will not change.

More benefits changes will take place throughout next year, and the Looking Ahead in 2010 site will be updated as necessary.

The pension insurance agency made regular payments to almost 640,000 Americans in 2008 and lump-sum payments to another 17,000 participants, dispersing almost $4.3 billion to retirees and their beneficiaries, PBGC said in its annual data report. Another 495,000 individuals are eligible for future PBGC benefit payments

2nd UPDATE: US Pension Insurer Ends FY09 With $22 Billion Deficit

(Updates with more details from PBGC's financial report in fourth paragraph.)

By Darrell A. Hughes

Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- The U.S. Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp.'s deficit for fiscal year 2009 nearly doubled to $22 billion, the agency said Friday.

But the deficit of the agency, which protects pension benefits in private- sector traditional pension plans, is roughly $11.5 billion below the mid-year results PBGC released in May.

"Exposure to possible future terminations means that we could face much higher deficits in the future," PBGC's Acting Director Vincent Snowbarger said in a statement. "We won't fail to meet our obligations to retirees, but ultimately we will need a long-term solution to stabilize the pension insurance program."

According to PBGC's report, 27 large pension plans with a total underfunding of $1.64 billion have categorized as "probable losses" on the agency's balance sheet. Also, the insurer's potential exposure to future pension losses from financially weak companies more than tripled to about $168 billion from the $47 billion booked in fiscal year 2008, PBGC said.

Subject: Applying for a Pilots Job at Delta

To: "Richard Deeds"

Date: Tuesday, November 24, 2009, 2:39 PM

Dick,    Now that my son has 5000+ hours it is time for him to try to apply for a job with Delta,  He has heard that they are now hiring,  Do you know who we contact to see how we go about getting him to an interview?            Peter T. Reed

Editor: Hiring is news to me, but I will check into it and also try to get the latest contact in recruitment to contact.

As a follow here is what my son has on the subject:

There is a large thread about this over on flight info.  The general gist of it is that Delta IS receiving applications and that we are closer to hiring for next year than we are to furloughing.  Nothing official, and it's even denied by execs.  But they have been actively editing their apps. site.  You access it through , but I think it's still the airapps website.  Of course, it's always good to show that you're keeping your app. up to date to show interest.  That's it for now. Mike

Human Interest:

I thank George Chaudoin for sharing the following:

This ridiculous happening might interest you.  He deserves help....

This is from NH friend Jean Coutu. Mr. Coutu is the person who annually organizes the (infamous?) "LIVE FREE OR DIE" rally in Jaffrey, NH. Some of you may recall he had to address the Town of Jaffrey (NH) Board of Selectmen (or 'Selectpeople') to seek their blessing concerning the firearm's match that was to be held ON HIS PROPERTY during this rally, which occurs every August. This is the 4th or 5th (or more) rally to be held!

Because Mr. Coutu won his plea, with the help of the ACLU(!) of all groups, he is still a 'contemptable-individual' in the eyes of the more Liberal factions in the state.

I don't have to tell many of you about New Hampshire's "Ice Age" of last December 11th; many being out of power right up to Christmas Eve and beyond! In fact, the town of New Ipswich, NH, just east of Jaffrey, had over 250 utility poles damaged! Each one required extensive repair and/or replacement! Generators were in such short supply the usual 'event-bandits' trucked them in and charged exorbitant amounts.

Now, the average citizen has (and with all due respect) no clue about 'what to hook up and where', 'what to remove and how' when it comes to connecting emergency generators to the circuit-breaker panel. In fact, there are those folks who figure "If I take my 5,000-watt generator and run an extention-cord from the generator's power-outlet to the CB-panel via an unused Breaker I CAN POWER MY WHOLE HOUSE!!!". WOW!!!!

And that's where some of the problems start!

Jean Coutu is not the only person who tried to help people connect emergency generators but it appears he is one solely responsible.

Maybe the so-called "Good-Samaritan Law", which deals mainly with highway MV accidents, should (probably) be extended to cover incidents like these.

Anyway, probably because of Mr. Coutu's 'misdeeds' in the eyes of our public servents (in several 'areas') he winds up being the victim. Yes...it probably is a vendetta!!

John Diefenbach

Mason, NH

State Of NH Felony Indicts Ice Storm Good Samaritan

Mark Hilbert, NH Dept. of Safety State Investigator, stalked and was charged with stalking a homeowner in Dublin over her generator being hooked up during the NH ice storm because the main breaker was accidentally left on, back-feeding to the power line grid. No one was harmed and the state had received hundreds of reports of people who had hooked up their generators this way due to shortages of parts during the ice storm state of emergency. Many lineman were checking for back feeding due to this.

The homeowner chose to drop charges by not per suing the stalking & harassment charges, assuming Hilbert & the DOS would just back off. Well, right after Mark's stalking court hearing, in retribution, where I had assisted this homeowner with her generator, he had charges pressed on me for two class A misdemeanors for helping another friend on his hot-dog trailer a year prior to the ice storm, seeking 60 days in jail, though the State DOS commissioner said trailers weren't a regulated activity; not requiring being a licensed contractor to work on trailers.

After almost 8 months battling that issue I was able to get it reduced to a fine with a good faith plea by the Jaffrey prosecutor, Dublin prosecutor Martha Jakes and my attorney Alex Parsons. No other charges, specifically for the generator situation in Dublin, would be made in the future, hopefully giving the state their 'eye-for-an-eye' thus settling all this once and for all.

We settled Oct. 27th at Jaffrey district Court. On November 17th Hilbert and the DOS had me indicted on felony charge's with the Cheshire County Superior Court for helping this Dublin homeowner with her generator during the ice storm. Now their attempting to have me serve 7 years for assisting her claiming it was felony reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon. (the deadly weapon being electricity) . I go to arraignment Nov. 25 praying they post bail. I have never been arrested for a felony! This is crazy. My attorney said he's never heard of this!

This is obviously a vendetta! If no one has figured this out by now, out of the other hundreds of reports the State & PSNH received about other generators people, electricians, etc., that were hooked up this way due to shortage's of parts during the state-of-emergency ice storm that none were prosecuted, or let alone brought felony charges against, just me.

We had also filed complaints  with the A.G. Office Executive Ethics Committee against Hilbert and his supervisor Robert Farley for falsifying information in court regarding the stalking charges and their continued abuse of office. The A.G. Ethic's committee ruled that though the evidence provided to them was not frivolous, that due to Hilbert & Farley being classified state employee's they were excluded from the committee's jurisdiction or any statutory authority to take action. Pretty much if your a classified employee in NH you can get away with anything and citizens have no recourse. Any means of support will be appreaciated.

Thank You,

Jean Coutu, caacp01@

Good story (Thanks Dave)

KILL 'EM AND EAT 'EM....A GREAT AVIATION STORY

This came from a Fellow who runs a 2000 acre corn farm

up around Barron , WI , not far from Oshkosh . He used

to fly F-4Es and F-16s for the Guard and participated in

the first Gulf War. I Submit for your enjoyment, and as a reminder that there are other great, magnificent flyers around besides us.

I went out to plant corn for a bit to finish a field

before tomorrow morning and witnessed The Great Battle .

A golden eagle - big bastard, with about a six foot

wingspan - flew right in front of the tractor. It was

being chased by three crows that were continually dive

bombing it and pecking at it. The crows do this because

the eagles rob their nests when they find them.

At any rate, the eagle banked hard right in one evasive

maneuver, then landed in the field about 100 feet from

the tractor. This eagle stood about 3 feet tall. The

crows all landed too, and took up positions around the

eagle at 120 degrees apart, but kept their distance at

about 20 feet from the big bird. The eagle would take a

couple steps towards one of the crows and they'd hop

backwards and forward to keep their distance. Then the

reinforcement showed up.

I happened to spot the eagle's mate hurtling down out of

the sky at what appeared to be approximately Mach 1.5.

Just before impact the eagle on the ground took flight,

(obviously a coordinated tactic; probably pre-briefed)

and the three crows which were watching the grounded

eagle, also took flight thinking they were going to get

in some more pecking on the big bird. The first crow

being targeted by the diving eagle never stood a

snowball's chance in hell. There was a mid-air explosion

of black feathers and that crow was done. The diving

eagle then banked hard left in what had to be a 9G

climbing turn, using the energy it had accumulated in

the dive, and hit crow #2 less than two seconds later.

Another crow dead.

The grounded eagle, which was now airborne and had an

altitude advantage on the remaining crow, which was

streaking eastward in full burner, made a short dive

then banked hard right when the escaping crow tried to

evade the hit. It didn't work - crow #3 bit the dust at

about 20 feet AGL.

This aerial battle was better than any air show I've

been to, including the war birds show at Oshkosh . The

two eagles ripped the crows apart and ate them on the

ground, and as I got closer and closer working my way

across the field, I passed within 20 feet of one of them

as it ate its catch. It stopped and looked at me as I

went by and you could see in the look of that bird that

it knew who's Boss Of The Sky. What a beautiful bird!

I loved it. Not only did they kill their enemy, they ate them.

One of the best Fighter Pilot stories I've seen in a long time...

There are no noble wars-- Only noble warriors

Subject: I Am Guilty!!!

Sometime ago, I resolved that no matter the importance of the story or the humor of the joke, I would no longer engage in the practice of mass mailings.  It is just my latest in a long line of broken resolutions.

Lots of folks who are much smarter than I believe that not only our country, but Western Civilization is at a tipping point.  Many think we have already passed it.  I pray that we haven't.  Most likely as an over reaction to the sins of our fathers in the treatment of minorities, we have let political correctness cripple us.  Our system of justice, academia, and now even our military have been infected.

Don Imus lost his job at WCBS Radio and MSNBC because he offended the Rutgers Women's Basketball Team.   His new gig is with my favorite TV group, FOX.  One of his staples is making fun of fallen TV Evangelists.  In my opinion, his parodies cross the line from making fun of men to using the name of Jesus for humor.  Of course, it's okay to offend Christians.  He would not dare use the name of Muhammad in some of his jokes the way he uses  the name of Jesus.  If he did, there would be a target on his back, and he probably would already be dead.

The thought police are ever vigilant.  In Canada they are called the Human Rights Commission.  If you are brought before them, you are guilty until proven innocent.  At least one preacher has had to make a public apology for offending homosexuals.  He promised to never again say that homosexual behaviour is sinful to avoid a several thousand dollar fine and a jail term.  Mark Steyn and Maclean's Magazine were charged with insulting Islam in a highly publizised case.  They had the funds and the forum to beat them, but most individuals don't.  There is a major push by Islamic nations to have the UN pass anti blasphemy laws.

Last Friday a letter called the Manhatten Declaration was signed by 152 Christian leaders.  I was very proud that my friend and Pastor, Dr. Michael Youssef, as well as my friend Dr. Ken Boa were among the 152.  Michael has stated privately, and from the pulpit that he will go to jail rather than compromise the Biblical truth.  Not long ago, that would have seemed farfetched, but it is not so farfetched today.

The letter has three points:

1.  the sanctity of human life

2.  the dignity of marriage as the conjugal union of husband and wife

3.  the rights of conscience and religious liberty.

The link is below is the Declaration on the DeMoss website.  It has the list of the 152 as well as the Declaration.

The official website of the Manhattan Declaration is:

I was on the website this morning around 6 AM and 105,000 plus had joined in signing.  I went back an hour later to add my signature, and more than 108,000 had signed.  The website is over loaded this afternoon, and currently unavailable.

1.  the sanctity of human life

2.  the dignity of marriage as the conjugal union of husband and wife

3.  the rights of conscience and religious liberty.

Humor/Sobering or Fun (Share some “vulgarity free” humor with the net):

Talking Lab: (thanks Dennis)

A guy is driving around the back woods of Montana and he sees a sign in front of a broken down shanty-style house: 'Talking Dog For Sale ' He rings the bell and the owner appears and tells him the dog is in the backyard.

The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking Labrador retriever sitting there.

'You talk?' he asks.

'Yep,' the Lab replies.

After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog talk, he says 'So, what's your story?'

The Lab looks up and says, 'Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping.'

'I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running. But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals.' 'I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired.'

The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.

'Ten dollars,' the guy says.

'Ten dollars? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?'

'Because he's a liar. He never did any of that stuff.

Kid’s say the darnedest things: (Thanks Paul)

The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples.. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray:

'Take only ONE . God is watching.'

Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies.

A child had written a note, 'Take all you want. God is watching the apples.'
