Comprehensive Exam for the MS degree in Accounting

All students must pass a comprehensive examination (offered twice each year). The comprehensive exam is three hours long, and runs from 6:00PM-9:00PM on the designated date. The exam consists of five accounting fields.

Each student must take a comprehensive exam in each of the four core Accounting courses: Accounting 706X, 707X, 708X, and 709X. For the fifth field, the student has the option to choose one course from the second tier, “accounting electives,” courses: Accounting 711X, 712X, 714X, 715X, or 781X. To graduate, the student must pass 4 out of the 5 exams.

If a student fails the comprehensive exam, he/she may apply to take it again in the following semester. If the student fails the comprehensive exam the second time, the student can petition to take the exam for a third time. There is no ‘fourth time’.

To file for the comprehensive exam, the student must be in his/her last semester. The student should complete the MS in Accounting form for the comprehensive exam (located in the Economics Department) indicating the 5 specific courses in which he/she wishes to be examined, and indicate the professors’ names with whom they took the course. These professors will then provide the questions for the comprehensive exam.

Courses in Other Departments and at Other Institutions:

With permission of the graduate deputy chairperson, up to 12 graduate credits may be accepted for work done at other institutions.

There are three basic requirements to be admitted into the program: (1) A complete undergraduate major in accounting (CPA Qualifying) or equivalent; (2) A minimum overall GPA of 3.0; (3) Two letters of recommendation.
