Frequently Asked Questions- Applying to Early College of Forsyth

What is the process for applying? Students must complete an application and submit all required documents, have an interview and take the college placement test known as Accuplacer.

What is the application deadline? We will start accepting applications in December and will interview applicants with all received paperwork in January. No applications will be accepted after February 28, 2014.

Where do I get an application? You can get an application on the Early College’s website or from Forsyth Tech’s website or from your guidance counselor at your middle school.

What needs to be turned with my application? A completed application, transcripts from all three years of middle school, a copy of your End of Grade Test Card, discipline record, attendance information and two reference forms: one from a core teacher and one from a guidance counselor.

Where can I get the reference form? References forms can be downloaded from our website or you may ask your middle school counselor for a form.

Where do I submit my application? We are asking all public school students to give your completed application to your school’s guidance counselor so they may attach your discipline, attendance, transcripts and End of Grade test card. Applications with missing forms will be considered incomplete and will not be called to interview. We will accept completed applications from individuals who are homeschooled or from private schools.

What is the process after my completed application is turned in? Once we receive a completed application, we will call you to schedule an interview date and time.

Where do I come for the interview? All interviews take place on Forsyth Technical Community College’s main campus in the Ardmore Hall. Come to our main office room 237 on the second floor.

How long is the interview? The actual interview is about fifteen minutes, but students will also be asked to do an on-sight writing sample and be given additional information on the process for taking their college placement test/Accuplacer. The whole process should take about 30 minutes.

Who comes to the interview? The interview is for the student only. Parents will be asked to remain in our waiting area while the student is interviewed. Due to the high volumes of student interviews, we are trying to limit the actual interview times to 15 minutes.

How do I get information on the Early College? You may check out our website or come to one of our open houses.(see below) We will also have a table with representatives at the Magnet Fair at the Benton Convention Center on January 4, 2014.

When are the afternoon open houses? They are Tuesday, January 7, 2014 or Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 4:00 PM. We ask you call (336)757-3290 to make a reservation because seats are limited. We will meet in the Ardmore Hall on the second floor, room 216.

When is the evening open house? The evening open house is on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at 6:00 PM in Ardmore Hall’s auditorium.

Can I attend more than one open house? We ask you to attend only one of the reserved afternoon sessions. Since all the sessions are the same we ask you only attend one. The same information will be given at all three sessions.

What is the College Placement Test (CPT) or Accuplacer test? The CPT or Accuplacer is a college readiness test that all students who apply to Forsyth Tech must take in order to qualify for college transfer credit courses. There are four parts to the test: Reading Comprehension, Sentence Skills, Arithmetic and Algebra. All students who apply are required to take three parts: Read Comprehension, Sentence Skills and Arithmetic. Any student who has taken Algebra I or Integrated I will also be asked to complete the Algebra test as well.

Who takes the test? All students seeking admittance into the Early College need to take the CPT unless you took the SAT in seventh grade and have qualifying scores. If you took the SAT as part of the Duke Talent Search and can provide us with those scores, your CPT testing may be waived.

Where is the test taken? The test is taken at the Forsyth Tech’s testing center located in the Allman Hall on Miller Street.

When is the test taken? Once students are interviewed, they will be given a test review packet and blue test card. The test card gives the student permission to test and tells the test center what tests need to be taken. Students are given a deadline to test by and must complete all tests by that date.

How is the test taken? The tests are taken on computer.

How long is the test? The test is not timed. Students can take as much time as needed. On average the three parts can take anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour and a half if all four parts are done.

Can a test be stopped and gone back to? No; once a test is started it cannot be stopped.

Can I review my test before submitting it? No; once a question is answered and submitted you cannot go back to it. If you skip a question and do not answer it, it is marked wrong, so guessing is recommended.
