IS IT REALLY WORTH THE DRIVE? Only if you appreciate excellent powder skiing close to home in early March. How much is a plane ticket to Colorado these days, anyway? Three more inches of fresh snow yesterday has things looking pretty fine. If you ski, you should be here!
OUR NORDIC CRYSTAL BALL: Thanks to Barry’s grooming touch and more snow yesterday, conditions are ideal. Long days and BRIGHT MOONLIGHT SKIING should be scrawled all over your calendar in ink…no pencil. We’ll be checking. Get it over here! The long summer ahead can wait!

Overheard…”That will be the last blast of the winter” a flatlander thinking it is all over here, more snows through next week!
Cannot tell you how much your website has meant to this misplaced cannanite...and it is really one of the best! Got some old film developed last week and it has some pictures of a familiar chimney sweep in front of a familiar fireplace and also in front of a familiar truck...said sweep wearing a very worn top hat. Wonder who that might be? I AM STILL HOMESICK FOR CANAAN AND WHITE GRASS!!!! Love to all, mary (mc hugh) and dale Johnson
Hey Chipper,
Didn’t make it in Feb. like we hoped. Miss Whitegrass so very much. Good
stuff this week around Roan Mtn. and Mt.Rogers. Love the web page. Makes me
feel like I am there and enjoying the Powderline.
Hey, any deals on womens Asolo Snowfield boots or equivalent in size 9

March 10-11 NATO TELEMARK FESTIVAL at Mad River Glen, Vermont: Ultra Big Tele Action- A Legend…Chip, Laurie and the boys have headed north with a car full of skis and big grins on their faces. Meanwhile, the White Grass staff left behind can only imagine the fun they’re going to have. If it’s like last year, we can look forward to receiving T-shirts that say “My boss went to the NATO tele fest and all I got was this stupid shirt.”
Saturday update: Mad River Glen owner Betsy Pratt reports that conditions there are the best she’s ever seen in her 40-plus years of owning and managing the Mecca of telemark skiing. We’d be really, really jealous right now if it weren’t so nice here….

Discover why Cross Country Skiing is one of the most wonderful lifetime winter sports. Besides being healthy and challenging, it burns up very little of our world's resources. Our ski area and cafe electric bill now averages less than $3.49 per day. Guess who's burnin' up all the energy in this sport?
Ten speedy racers flew around the snowfarm recently in our 20th Mountain State Marathon XC Race. For more details, check out the in depth coverage:
WHAT'S PLAYIN? WE have been pulling in Pittsburg's Public Radio WYEP for the a most delectable tuneage on planet earth. Absolutely nothing is better than their mix; it is rich, diverse, engaging, tasteful, and above all…EXCITING!! Keeps the place hoppin'. Public radio as it could be in your hometown. They stream live online and hear for yourself.
KIDS SKI TOO! Our popular 20 year running Kids Trade-For-Free Ski Program starts at $45, jumps to $175 with boots, short-wide skis, poles, and step in bindings. Buy once and trade for free until adult sizes where another $75 is collected. Your total lifetime investment should be around $250.00. They always have their own gear, praying for snow. We enjoy watching them grow up skiing. Cross country skills acquired while limber and unafraid usually puts a child in the drivers seat at mastering the easier and less complex sports of snowboarding and alpine skiing. Our hot shot skiing kids make easy proof. Free the heels…lifts, we don’t need no stinking lifts! Zero travel when snow hits home. What are you waiting for?

The White Grass Cafe Cookbook is one that will travel everywhere with me. The recipes are wonderful and simple to follow. Healthy eating and living is proven easy at White Grass. Anytime I fix something from the cookbook, the smell in our kitchen brings us back to one of our favorite places....White Grass Ski Touring Center and Cafe! Happy Trails!
Never used a cookbook so much. Makes me feel like I'm back in WV. It's truly wonderful. Thanks for being my cooking teachers. Couldn't of done it without you.
A ski "homey" flavor is generated throughout the cookbook which makes it warm, inviting, and friendly for use. Great sayings ("eat for living in the mountains") generated reading a good book. I find something new everytime I look up a recipe! Cheers! Jeanne Holmes, Norwich, Vermont

For Outdoorswomen, Being a Ranger Involves More Than a Walk in the Park
Whenever I go to a national park, I decide to become a ranger. I can't think of anything more romantic than working in Yellowstone, Yosemite or the Grand Canyon. But what's the job really like, and how do women fare in the park service?
Teen Skiers Killed by Avalanche Knew Risk, Experts Say
They were among the top skiers on the mountain, nationally ranked and potential candidates for the U.S. Olympic ski team.

Two hope unusual methods can get them to finish line
If spectators at Saturday's American Birkebeiner cross country ski race stick around long enough, they might see two skiers cross the finish line in dramatically different fashions from the other competitors.
The great alpine escape
Backcountry ski huts have been part of mountain culture for thousands of years, at least since the time when some clever reindeer herders in Scandinavia strapped birchbark runners to their feet and sought shelter on their way across the snowy tundra.
You go, girls! Women-only groups are happily migrating toward adventure travel
Until she snatched a paddle and hit the beach on this uninhabited island off Mexico's Baja California peninsula, 62-year-old Lyla Fuller was terrified to put her face in the water, much less intentionally capsize a kayak in the chilly clutches of the Sea of Cortez.
Avalanche beacons important for snowmachiners
Just because you are wearing a beacon does not mean you will come out of an avalanche alive. But it does mean that if you aren't buried too deep you have a better chance of your friends getting to you quickly. If you're buried without a beacon, there's a very good chance that you are going to stay buried.

RECENT BACKSCATTER
Hey Chip and Laurie,
What a great time! I am writing to tell you about the art I gave you and tell you what a rebirth our ski trip was. You all make everything seem easy. We ate at whitegrass two nights and had the most romantic supper with my husband in seven years. The art work is a good luck piece for you. The Thunderbird has red wings and the Raven is the smaller one. Sun and Moon symbolize “thru the days”. Good luck for the rest of the season and see you on the web! Peace, Love, and Precipitation. Hi Chipper,
Just was thinking about you. It's been a GREAT winter. Seems like it's
been too long since the last ski at Whitegrass. Woke up here this mornin
with 2 fresh inches....oooh how nice. something really exciting while
greeting the snow this morning, the sound of spring was relentless. the
birds sounded happy to have the snow on the limbs. the sugar sap has
been flowin'. can't help to drink a wine glass of fresh syrup right off
the stove....miss you all, and see you soon, much love, jeanne and j.t. ................
