Policy/Procedures

ALL GW Obstetrics and Gynecology residents are required to have active ACLS certification.

Initial ACLS certification must occur prior to the start of residency and residents must have an active certification to start the program. ACLS certification is valid for two years. The resident is responsible for renewing their certification before it expires; some of our sites require active ACLS certification in order for residents to rotate there.

When to register:

The hospital will sponsor one certification renewal during the course of the training program. Residents must take the renewal course BEFORE the end of the month in which their certificate expires. If a resident registers after their card expires, they will have to take the full course again rather than the renewal course. The hospital will NOT reimburse for a FULL course in the event the resident allowed certification to expire.

Training requests MUST be sent at least 48 hours prior to a course. Please be aware that courses fill up quickly, therefore submit your request as soon as possible to ensure you will be able to reserve a seat. If a course is no longer listed on the website, it means the course is full and has closed.

Finding ACLS renewal course dates:

Go online to and click on the course calendar link in the center of the page. GW Hospital will only pay for the renewal ACLS course once during residency and will not pay for the full certification - since you are responsible for having ACLS at the beginning or your training.

How to register:

Residents must register by the process below in order to have the cost covered.

When scheduling the course, the time to take the course must be approved in advance by the Administrative Chief Residents.

In order to register for an ACLS class, you will need a Gift Certificate Code. Please visit the 5th Floor Nursing Administration Office at GW Hospital to pick up the code. Please note that the code is unique to the specific resident, and is only good for the renewal course type. This code does not include the cost of required books or additional material. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology will, upon provision of the appropriate receipt, reimburse the resident for the cost of the required manual.

1. Go online to ACLSR.aspx

2. Click on the ACLS Renewal Course link at the bottom of the page.

3. Select the desired course date and check the required boxes.

4. Press “Add to Cart”

5. Click on the “Checkout” link located on the top right corner.

6. Fill in the required fields to sign up.

7. Click “Next” to go to the payment page

8. Enter the Gift Certificate Code in the assigned box and hit apply.

9. Confirm all information on this page is correct.

10. Select “Place your order”

Payment for the class:

GW Hospital will pay for the class but ONLY if you register for the class through the GW Training Center following the steps above. The MFA WILL NOT reimburse you if you pay for the class yourself up front and you WILL NOT be reimbursed for ACLS courses taken elsewhere.

Residents will not be allowed into the course if they do not bring the ACLS book.

Location of class:

GW Training Center

2120 L Street, NW, Suite 530

Washington, DC 20037

After the class:

After the course the resident will receive a card signifying they are ACLS certified. A copy of both sides of this card must be given (scan electronically, email or text a cell phone picture, or a hard copy) to the Residency Office to be loaded to MedHub
