TAMMS NON-YELLOWING CURING AND SEALING COMPOUNDS

LUSTER SEAL WB 150

(ASTM C309, Type 1, Class A and B)

This specification describes the proper procedures for curing freshly placed concrete surfaces as well as sealing existing concrete surfaces using an acrylic curing and sealing compound. Tamms Luster Seal WB acrylic curing and sealing compounds are clear, transparent, ready-to-apply non-yellowing compounds formulated in an aqueous blend of special acrylic copolymers and quick-evaporating co-solvents. These products enable the concrete to develop proper strengths and hardness. Properly cured concrete will have reduced shrinkage cracks, dust less, increased surface hardness and be more durable and wear resistant.

When used as a curing compound Luster Seal WB 150 promotes proper hydration by reducing moisture loss from the concrete. For outdoor concrete curing the use of a proper curing and sealing compound is particularly important due to variations of temperature, relative humidity and wind conditions, all of which effect moisture rate of evaporation.

When used as a sealer Luster Seal WB 150 reduces dusting, provides a surface that is easy to maintain, and can be applied to provide a desirable surface sheen. Properly sealed concrete surfaces provide resistance to traffic, abrasion, low concentrations of chemicals and dirt impregnation. Sealing concrete surfaces also reduces the amount of water that penetrates into the concrete, which reduces the likelihood of freeze/thaw damage.

1.0 General:

1.01 Work Included:

A. Furnish all materials, labor, tools, and equipment to apply a curing and sealing compound as designated by the Owner.

1.04 Submittals:

Prior to the start of any application of the curing and sealing compound the following submittals shall be made for review and approval:

A. Submit literature and manufacturer's installation instructions.

B. Samples of all materials to be used shall be submitted to the engineer for approval prior to start of work.

C. If a substitute product is being submitted to the engineer then submit independent test data substantiating that the product meets or exceeds these specifications.

D. The manufacturer of the curing and sealing compound shall certify that the product complies with these specifications.

1.05 Quality Assurance:

A. Manufacturer qualifications: The manufacturer of the specified product shall have experience in the production and use of the product specified. The manufacturer shall supply a list of projects where their products have been used on similar projects with similar jobsite and exposure conditions.

B. Contractor Qualifications: The installation shall be performed by an applicator having at least five years prior experience with the use and application of the specified materials or similar products.

A list of projects shall be submitted to the engineer/owner so that the engineer/owner can be satisfied with the qualifications of the contractor.

C. Pre-Installation Conference: There shall be a pre-installation conference to review procedures, materials, techniques and for coordinating related work, and shutdowns.

D. Mock-up: Before applying curing and sealing compound to entire surface, test a small area to verify that product is providing the desired moisture retention, penetration ability and finish appearance (sheen).

1.06 Delivery, Storage, and Handling:

A. Deliver the specified product in the original; unopened containers with the manufacturers name, labels, product identification and batch numbers. They shall be ordered in sufficient quantities and shall be delivered in ample time to facilitate the work.

B. Store and condition the specified product as recommended by the manufacturer. The material shall be stored on the premises where directed.

1.07 Jobsite Conditions:

A. Refer to the applicable TAMMS Technical Bulletin for the recommended temperature of surfaces to be sealed and ambient conditions during application and drying.

B. Do not apply material if the substrate is frozen or if freezing conditions are imminent.

C. When using as a curing compound, apply when surface water has completely disappeared and the concrete will not be marred by workmen.

D. Do not apply if rain is expected within 12 hours.

E. The Contractor shall provide suitable coverings to protect his own work, the work of others, and all adjacent surfaces and objects. Finished equipment and surfaces shall be masked for protection. Drop cloths, where necessary, shall be placed in an approved manner to adequately protect all surfaces not to be sealed. Mask off adjoining surfaces and close off drains.

F. Surfaces cannot be contaminated between coats.

G. Protect sealed surfaces during drying from traffic, damage and contamination.

1.08 Safety Precautions:

Applicators should follow the safety precautions listed below:

A. Refer to Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for additional safety information.

B. Material is for industrial use. Keep away from children.

C. Provide adequate forced air ventilation.

D. Avoid contact with eyes and skin; do not ingest or inhale. Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions.

E. Wear goggles, NIOSH and MSHA approved respirators, rubber gloves, and appropriate clothing.

2.0 Product:

2.01 Acceptable Manufacturers:

Luster Seal WB 150 as manufactured by Tamms Industries, 3835 State Route 72, Kirkland, IL 60146, 1-800-862-2667, is considered to conform to the requirements of this specification and has performed satisfactorily for curing and sealing concrete surfaces for a minimum of five years.

2.02 Substitutions:

The use of other than the specified product will be considered providing the contractor requests its use in writing to the engineer. A certificate of compliance from an independent testing laboratory that the proposed substitute product meets or exceeds the specified performance criteria, when tested in accordance with the specified test standards shall accompany this request. Documented proof shall also be provided showing that the proposed substitute has a five year proven record of performance on similar structures under similar exposures. At least five successful installations shall be provided so the engineer can investigate the condition of the system.

2.03 Performance Criteria:

Properties of the non-yellowing acrylic copolymer curing and sealing compound:

1. The curing and sealing compound shall meet the requirements of ASTM C309, Type 1, Class A and B. The specified product shall also comply with EPA National VOC AIM Rules (Federal Register Vol. 63 No. 176: September 11, 1998).

2. Viscosity (Brookfield Viscometer, Spindle #1; Speed 100), cps:

a. Luster Seal WB 150: 5-15

3. Initial Dry Time, minutes: 50-60

4. Abrasion Resistance, CS-17 Wheel, 1000 gms/1000 cycles:

a. Luster Seal WB 150: 0.012 gms. weight loss

5. VOC gms/litre:

a. Luster Seal WB 150: 100

6. Gloss:

a. Luster Seal WB 150: Low Sheen

3.0 Execution:

3.01 Surface Preparation:

A. Curing Freshly Placed Concrete: Cure surfaces in accordance with ACI 308 Section 2.3.3. Surface must be finished and show no surface sheen from moisture. The surface must be able to withstand walking workmen.

B. Sealing Existing Concrete: All surfaces must be structurally sound, clean, free of dust, dirt, laitance, efflorescence, curing compounds, paint, oil, grease and other contaminants. Prior to application, surface defects, voids, cracks and joints should be properly treated and repaired. Concrete may be damp, but must be free of standing water

3.02 Application:

A. Apply the non-yellowing curing and sealing compound in a uniform, continuous film by sprayer, short nap roller, brush, or push broom.

B. Freshly Placed Concrete: Apply a full, even coat of curing and sealing compound at the rates described on the manufacturer’s printed literature ensuring complete and uniform coverage of the surface. Use an applicator or roller to pick up puddles or excess material from the surface. If a higher sheen is desired, a second coat may be applied. If the delay between the first and second coat results in contamination of the surface, the surface must be thoroughly cleaned before application of the second coat.

C. Sealing Existing Concrete: Apply a full, even coat of curing and sealing compound at the rates described on the manufacturer’s printed literature. Use an applicator or roller to pick up puddles or excess material from the surface. If a higher sheen is desired a second coat may be applied as soon as the first coat has dried (2-4 hours at 75°F). The surface porosity and the amount of surface sheen desired determines the selection of material for the second coat.

3.03 Drying:

A. The coated concrete can usually be opened to foot traffic in 8-12 hours, with maximum surface hardness developed within 7-10 days.

3.04 Cleaning:

A. The curing and sealing compound can be cleaned from tools with water or a blend of water/butyl cellosolve.

B. Leave finished work and work area in a neat, clean condition without evidence of spillovers onto adjacent areas.
