Most colleges and universities require incoming students to take placement tests prior to registering for classes. The most common placement test is the Accuplacer which is used by UTEP and EPCC. The calculator policy is:

1. Only simple, four-function (add, subtract, multiply and divide), non-programmable

calculator (square root and percent keys permitted) may be brought to the test site.

2. Individuals must bring their own calculators.

Once in college, you may be required to take the THEA if you attend a Texas university. The state of Texas requires, through the THEA, that all undergraduate students take a test covering reading, writing and mathematical skills prior to enrolling for college-level credit at Texas public institutions, unless the student meets the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s exemptions in accordance with Texas law (Texas Education Code Section 51.306). You are exempt if:

• You earned 3 or more hours of college-level credit prior to the fall semester of 1989.

• Blind and Deaf students who did not earn three or more college-level hours before September 1, 1995 are no longer exempt from the THEA test. Beginning Fall 1995 blind students will be required to take the THEA test (with appropriate accommodations). Deaf students will be required to take the THEA.

• You have at least a 23 on the American College Test (ACT) with math and English scores of no less than 19.*

• You have the following minimum Scholastic Assessment Test I (SAT I)* scores: combined 1070, 500 verbal, 500 math.

• You have Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS)** minimum scale scores of TLI X-89 in reading, TLI X-86 in math, and 1770 in writing.

By state law, failure to take the THEA test will prevent students from completing the enrollment process. Students will be placed in remediation for any section failed. Students who have not passed all sections of the THEA test may not enroll in upper-division courses that would give the student 60 or more semester credit hours.
