Mount Tabor Students and Parents:In the coming weeks, the school counselors will attend virtual updates sponsored by the College Board and the ACT Program. For now we want to offer some updates and guidance about the PSAT/NMSQT, PreACT, SAT, ACT, and AP Exams. We will share more information as decisions are made by the testing programs and our school district. The PSAT/NMSQT was scheduled for October 14, 2020, but it has been postponed in our school district until January 26, 2021. Juniors may take the test in January as practice for the SAT and qualification for National Merit and other scholarship competitions. Sophomores and freshmen will also be invited to take the test as practice for future PSAT/NMSQT administrations and the SAT. The cost is $17, and we will begin registering students in early November. Juniors who qualify may register with a fee waiver. The PreACT continues to be planned for all sophomores but the administration date is not set at this time. All sophomores in NC usually take the PreACT with no cost to families in October or early November as practive for the ACT. The testing window has been extended to spring. The WS/FCS will announce a test date. The coronavirus pandemic caused the SAT and ACT dates to be cancelled across North Carolina and much of the United States since March of 2020. Current seniors have had limited opportunities to take these assessments which are usually required by most colleges and universities for admission. Most North Carolina public school seniors took the ACT in February 2020, but many would have chosen to take the ACT again and/or take the SAT to establish stronger college application credentials. The University of North Carolina system and many other colleges and universities have made decisions that allow current seniors to apply with or without ACT/SAT scores. Due to the impact of COVID-19 on standardized test availability and the likelihood of additional testing date cancellations the UNC Board of Governors has waived the standardized test requirement for first-year students applying for admissions for Spring 2021, Summer 2021, and Fall 2021 to all UNC System Institutions. We encourage seniors to review admissions requirements and expectations at the website of each college or university where they want to apply. We also invite seniors to discuss taking the ACT or SAT and submitting test scores with their school counselors. Seniors and younger students may register for SAT () and ACT () national test dates that are scheduled for Fall 2020 and Spring 2021. Examinee safety and regular protocols are available at the test registration websites to help families make decisions about registering to test. The UNC system waiver does not extend beyond Fall of 2021 so younger students should be following a regular plan to prepare for the ACT and SAT. North Carolina has plans for current juniors to take the ACT at school in February 2021 at no cost to families. We will share more information as it becomes available. The Advanced Placement Program is currently planning for in-school testing. Test dates are scheduled for May 3-14, 2021. We welcome your questions about any of these testing programs that promote Career and College Readiness for our high school students. ................
