Duet Acting Scene

Theatre I Duet Acting Scene

Objective: students will prepare and perform an acting scene in class incorporating all elements of theatre studied so far this semester including characterization, movement, stage business, and vocalization for a performance test grade.

Students will work with a partner to prepare an acting scene for performance. Several scripts are available, partners should read ALL scripts (a script assessment will be completed for daily grade) to choose a favorite to prepare for performance. *Some students may work on their own and will select a solo acting script to prepare for performance following the same guidelines below, there will not be any group scenes.

All scenes are from published scripts. No original scripts will be used.

Students will memorize their scene dialogue for a graded line check and must retain lines for performance.

Scenes will be performed using minimal furniture, costumes, and props; only what is necessary to suggest environment and character. Daily grades for character analysis, line memorization and rehearsal performance will be earned.

*The line memorization check with be a separate daily grade for each partner and will take place after approximately two weeks of class rehearsal time. Any student needing more time to memorize should consider the script homework. Line checks will be performed for the class without using the script. Five points will be deducted from 100 for each prompt (student must be told the line to continue) and the script will be marked for review at each prompt. Memorization takes time and a concentrated effort by the student!

Students will each be given 2 copies of their scene script. One copy is to be left in class at all times and the other should be kept by the student to study outside of class. Take a photo of each page with your phone for an extra copy to study! No additional copies will be made. Please be responsible with your scripts! Script notation (lines highlighted, blocking written in pencil) will be a daily grade for each copy of the script. Daily rehearsal grades will be earned for on-task, productive practice with their partner.

Performances will be presented in class and will count as a performance test grade. Students will be graded on memorization, characterization, blocking, and the overall quality of their presentation.

*Duet Acting is an event offered at the NEISD Speech & Theatre contest to be held on December 15 at Churchill HS. Theatre II students are encouraged to participate! See Mrs. Eanes for more information about performing your class scene at contest. All contest participants must prepare two events for competition, duet acting may count as one. This is a great opportunity to be part of our winning theatre team and participate in an extra-curricular theatre event with other theatre students! Contest rehearsal calendars are available, rehearsals begin November 13! 7th graders planning to take Theatre III next year must compete in at least one contest this year so now would be a great time to get started for the competition at Churchill on December 15! Be part of a winning team, act like a champion!

*Theatre I students performing a Duet scene for contest may use the same scene for class. If the contest partner is not in the same class, then another partner may be chosen using the same contest script and character. Contest participants should focus on contest scripts, do not select a separate script/partner for class only.
