Active and Passive Voice
Rule 1: Voice shows how a verb speaks.
Rule 2: A verb speaks actively when the subject or doer performs the act.
Rule 3: The intransitive verb always speaks actively because the subject is always the doer.
Rule 4: A transitive verb can speak actively or passively.
Rule 5: It speaks actively when the subject is the doer.
Rule 6: It speaks passively when the complement is the subject. Only transitive verbs have a receiver, a what or whom.
Rule 7: When the receiver is the subject of a sentence, the verb is passive voice.
Unit 2 Exercise 1 Change the following sentences into the passive voice.
1. Ted sent a message to his brother.
2. My mother washed the windows.
3. A classmate stole my algebra book.
4. We put the dishes on the table.

Use of Passive Voice
Rule 8: Use the passive voice when the doer is unknown.
Rule 9: Use the passive voice for emphasis.

Third Basic Sentence Pattern: Subject, Linking Verb, Subject Complement
Rule 10: A linking Verb merely links the subject with its complement.
Rule 11: It is called a state-of-being verb; it does not act.
Rule 12: Its function is to link the subject with its complement.
Rule 13: The state-of-being verbs: am, is, are, was, were, be, been.
Rule 14: The complement of a linking verb refers back to the subject; it completes the subject.
Rule 15: The complement of a linking verb can be a noun, pronoun, or an adjective.
Rule 16: Another term for subject complement is the predicate nominative (for nouns and pronouns) or predicate adjective.
State-of-Being Verbs
The most common linking verbs are forms of be:
am, is, are, was, were, be, been.
Rule 17: To be linking the verb must link
Rule 18: IF it doesn’t link it is classified as intransitive.

Passive Voice Versus Linking Verbs
Rule 19: Passive voice also uses the forms of the verb be, but a form of a verb must follow the forms of be not a noun, pronoun, or adjective.
Was found (verb-passive) was captain (noun-linking)
Will be frozen (verb-passive) is he (pronoun-linking)
Are taken (verb-passive) be good (adjective-linking)
