The 3rd and 4th grade are doing their various morning ...

Kindergarten

A typical morning for kindergarten has phonics, and math lessons, snack, play/reading time, and varied activities like science, sing-a-longs, life skills, and group activities. Next we have lunch and play time for an hour. After lunch we do another phonic lesson and have naptime until we go to snack. When we come back from snack we do another lesson and end with more play/reading time. By 5:00 we have had a full day.

1st and 2nd Grades

This week, in math class with Mr. Kim, the first and second graders have been practicing adding and subtracting on their worksheets. They are also learning to tell time and to read thermometers. After that, they receive workbooks to work on. Near the end of class they learn basic fractions because they are just now learning them in their booklets. In Language Arts, the first and second graders are learning about the months and seasons of the year. Miss Paula has been teaching them about each day of the month, and about famous people who have birthdays in that month. The students have also learned about how animals, people and plants behave in different seasons. In Science class, Mr. Smith has been teaching them about flowers, and they have been conducting an experiment in which they all get to grow flowers. Sounds fun!

3rd and 4th Grades

The 3rd and 4th grade are doing their various morning activities. They are taught measurement, the four functions, decimals, fractions, and basic math in the morning. Victor Wip says, "I like it sometimes and I know addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division". In language arts, the 3rd and 4th grade are doing basic grammar. In writing, they learn to write letters (the kind you send, of course!), and in science they have learned about our own Milky Way Galaxy and the stars beyond!!!

5th and 6th Grades

The students here in the 5th and 6th grade classroom are learning a lot of things in their core subjects, Science, Math, and Language Arts. They are also learning a lot in their other classes. In Science they are learning about rocks and the rock cycle with Mr. Steve. Sounds like fun! In Math they are reasoning with temperature and calculating tax rates with Mr. Kim. They are also learning parts of speech in Language Arts with Ms. Paula. Then, they eat lunch and move on to Chinese Knots. The teacher teaches how to make awesome ornaments out of string and paper! Shindy, Isabella and Jennifer are the masters in this subject. Next, they go to Reading/Comprehension with Ms. Paula again. Finally, they take Kung Fu and learn how to master the art of fighting and discipline. After all that they call it a day. But that’s only for Wednesday.

On other days they attend their first 3 classes and either go to 3 more classes or go on a field trip! The 5th and 6th grade class always follow directions and pay attention. The 5th and 6th graders are Aaron, Jennifer, Shindy, Kevin, Isabella, Katherine, and Jasmine.

7th Grade and Up

One week has passed in Sun Ray Summer School and we've learned a lot of new vocabulary words in SAT class with Brian and are currently still learning words and math subjects such as Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. Tiffany says, "I love Algebra 2! I always win!" Every morning besides Thursday we do a test defining all the vocabulary words we've covered in the first two weeks, which make about 95 vocabulary words. The usual highest scorers are Esther and Thomas. On Thursdays instead of doing the vocabulary words we do a practice SAT, that is, the whole test, all 10 sections. "I wouldn't call it fun," says Brian. "Actually, I'd call it excessively not fun. Funless. Fun-free. But it's important practice nonetheless."

In other, less important news, Philip and Winston have created forts made out of about 5 desks made into a circle in the corners of the room. Philip claims that his fort is "Fort Coolness" and Winston has declared that his fort is named "Fort Funs-a-lot." War has been declared!

Fire Alarm on Friday

At around 4:30, Friday afternoon, there was a great commotion among the students at Sun Ray Summer School.

In an accident involving a basketball, a fire alarm, unnamed student Winford Ko, who prefers to remain anonymous, and a big coincidence, the fire alarm was set off.

In the midst of a great panic, Brian led the kids outside as calmly as possible. "To tell the truth," he says, "I didn't have the foggiest what had happened, but I figured we could sort it out after we made sure the kids were all okay." Luckily, there was no real danger whatsoever and the leaving of the building prevented only hearing loss from the piercingly loud alarms.

Prudently, teachers and counselors were watching kids outside, waiting for the all-clear in order to go back in. With the afternoon sun streaming down and many students about to leave, children were allowed to enter the building quickly to get water and pack up their belongings.

Inexplicably, neither the fire department nor building security responded to the fire alarm. Finally, a whole hour after it was turned on, a janitor finally came in and turned off the fire alarm, and the kids were allowed back into the building.

The most important thing, though, was that no one was hurt thanks to the quick thinking by the ace mathematician, human vocabulary list, and everybody's favorite super hero, Brian Young, who swears he did not pay Philip off to write this.

The fire alarm was a great excuse to let the kids roam and play outside. When asked how he liked playing outside, unnamed student Winford Ko replied, "It was pretty cool, I guess."

NOTES

New Rule:

NO games and Game Boys or other electronics are allowed to be taken to the field trips!!!

When we go on field trips please tell your child on that day to leave their games in their backpack.

This rule was made because the students that play Pokemon were playing the game when the Sun Ray students were eating at CiCi's Pizza and not eating their food and spilling their drinks.

Plus, we do not want to be responsible for lost games and Game Boys.

CiCi's Pizza

We did not go to CiCi's Pizza this friday 6/17/05 as a punishment for being too crazy, wasting food, and spilling drinks, as well as playing too much with Game Boys.

We might be going next week if all the students are good.
