Introduction

Oh no kids! The fire alarm has just been pulled at school because there is a fire! Do not panic! What should you do? To get out safely, you are going to learn the rules of how to be safe during a fire drill!

The Task

How are you going to get out of the building safe?

Throughout the lesson and activities, your group will be learning how to get out of the fire safely! Your group will be looking at websites with the help of a teacher’s assistant, learning interesting facts, drawing pictures to help you learn about fire safety, and presenting your facts to the class! Have fun and be creative!

The Process

1. The teacher will read the instructions for this activity, and if you have any questions there will be a teaching assistant to help you!

2. First, you will be put into a group with 3 people.

3. You will also be assigned a job in that group.

The jobs:

Recorder- The recorder must write/record any important words or facts the group decides is important to get out of the school during a fire. These must be something new that your group has learned or are helpful hints to keep safe. This will help you remember fire safety! If you need help, do not forget to ask the teaching assistant!

Artist- The artist must draw important pictures about fire drills at the end of each step. Be creative!

Presenter- The presenter must present three facts your group thinks is important to the class at the end of the activity.

3. The first step in fire safety is the fire alarm! You should always be aware of the sound of a fire alarm! Know what it looks like and know what to do! Always pull the fire alarm if you smell smoke or see a fire! CLICK on the link below, and click play to listen!

Recorder- Write one word to describe the sound of the fire alarm that you just listened to.

Artist- Draw a picture that may help you remember the sound OR what to do if you hear the sound!

4. The second step is to know the number 9-1-1. The phone number 9-1-1 is important in ANY emergency, but ALWAYS call 9-1-1 if you smell smoke or see a fire! If you call 9-1-1, HELP will come! CLICK on the link below, and listen to the rap music that is played on the website to help you remember more about the number 9-1-1.

Recorder- Write a word or a fact that you learned about from the rap song about 9-1-1.

Artist- Draw a picture about a time when you called 9-1-1, OR if you have never called 9-1-1, draw a picture of a time when it is important to dial 9-1-1.

5. In a fire, always keep quiet! You should always keep quiet so everyone can stay calm.

6. Always shut the windows and the door before leaving. Shutting the windows is important so the fire does not get bigger! Shut the door so the teacher knows every student is out of the room! Make sure to use the stairs instead of the elevator. This is because the elevator may be broken during a fire, and the stairs are a safer exit.

Recorder- What do you think this sign means? Write what you think on your paper.

Artist- Draw a picture of where you think a sign like this should be!

7. When you get out of the building, there should always be a class-meeting place. Your teacher and your class should decide on this place together. Make sure it is far from the building, tall, and make sure everyone remembers where it is! CLICK on the link below for an example of a class-meeting place!

Recorder- Write one to three words of why a tree would be a great class-meeting place.

Artist- Draw a picture of another good idea for a meeting place.

8. When you are finished, tell the teaching assistant and the presenter must present three facts that your group learned from today’s activity about fire drills.

Evaluation

I will be looking at individual work and group work to decide on the grade you deserve. The job you were assigned will determine your individual grade, and your cooperation in your group will determine your group grade. This is out of 100 points. Group work is out of 30 points, and individual work is out of 70 points.
