Honors English 9 Vocabulary Menu of Activities

Directions: Choose from the list of activities below to complete when assigned homework from the Vocabulary Menu of Activities. Make sure that you spell the words correctly, and that you are using them correctly according to their parts of speech.

• Choose 12 words from your vocabulary list and write a poem using those words correctly. Underline the vocabulary words.

• Create a crossword puzzle on graph paper using at least 15 vocabulary words. Use the definitions as clues. Include an answer key on a separate sheet of graph paper.

• Choose 12 – 15 words from the list and create a recipe for making something. Underline the words you use in the directions. The recipe doesn’t have to be for something you can eat. [Ex: How to make an autocracy: 1. Start with an extreme ideology that gives you all the power. 2. ??]

• Sort all of the vocabulary words into groups or categories. Give each group a title, and write an explanation for why you put the words in each group together.

• Choose at least 15 words from your vocabulary list to use in a story. Underline the vocabulary words.

• Visual Representations: For each vocabulary word, draw a picture that will help you remember the word.

• Synonyms and Sentences: For each vocabulary word, find synonyms. Then use each word in an original sentence of your own. *Try finding antonyms for each word, as well.

• Choose at least 12 words from your vocabulary list and create a cloze passage, or fill-in-the-blank sentences that include context clues for the missing words. Make sure to create a word bank listing the vocabulary words that will complete the sentences.

• Prepare flashcards for all of the words in your vocabulary list. Flashcards should have the vocabulary word on the front, and the definition along with the part of speech and related words on the back of the card.

• Choose at least 12 words from your list and create a Vocabulary Playlist by linking each of the vocabulary words to a specific song. Your playlist needs to identify the word, the song title, and a brief explanation of the connection. *You may use TV shows, movies, and books, as well as songs if that helps you make meaningful connections you can use to learn definitions.

• Create a want ad that might appear in the local classified section of a newspaper.

• Create an advertisement for a magazine such as Entertainment Weekly, Time, or Sports Illustrated that uses vocabulary in its text.

• Create a comic strip of 4 – 6 panels, using at least 10 vocabulary words from your list in the dialogue of the strip’s characters.

• Mark off four boxes on a regular sheet of paper. In the center of the paper, write the word. In the top left box, write a definition for the word. In the right box, write a situation in which the word might be used. In the bottom left box, write a synonym for the word. In the bottom right box, write an example of how the word might personally connect with your life. Do this activity for any words you find yourself struggling to learn.

• Find that Word: record words from your vocabulary list when you encounter them in reading and speech; this helps you to see the words in different contexts and deepens your vocabulary knowledge. Follow these steps: 1) write the sentence in which the words appears ; 2) turn in sentences before the test to earn extra credit points

Points can be awarded for:

i. ½ point – Student saw or heard the word in speech, print or the media.

ii. 1 point – Student used the word in speech (have the person who hears

you use the word write the sentence for you).

iii. 1 point – Student used the word in writing. (put a post-it on the

assignment if it is one you are turning in for a grade)

**You may begin collecting words to earn up to 10 extra credit points before each

test. To collect words, keep looking and listening for, and using words from

previous lists.
