Background info on Honda/Acura Key Blanks:

There are two main styles of key blank for Honda/Acura vehicles. HD103 blanks and “Sidewinder” blanks. An HD103 blank is used on cars from the late 80s thru mid 2000s. It is the blank with a tapered tip with grooves running down the length. In these blanks, the key profile is cut to form “hills and valleys” along the outer edges to make it turn locks. Sidewinder blanks start out resembling solid billet “sticks” which when cut have material removed in a profile that makes them work in sidewinder style locks. Sidewinder keys get their name from the type of milling operation done to cut them.

What is important to you, why you bought a milled key:

You have purchased a Milled Key from Fastline Performance. This key is one that started out as a Sidewinder blank, and we have milled it to become an HD103 blank using precision tooling and equipment. The reason for doing this is that there are desirable key/fob combinations available in “sidewinder” blanks which people with HD103 locks would like to use. Those keys are the Switchblade from the 07-08 Acura TL Type S and the key from later Accords with remote buttons on the fob.

Cutting (creating the hills and valleys in the key that make it turn in your locks):

The key you order will arrive to you milled and ready to be cut. It is imperative that only a professional cut the key for you because if the cut is bad the key will be ruined. There are specific tips to note when getting keys cut that we provide on a tip sheet later in this document. HeelToe Automotive can perform the cut for you for additional cost, absolving you from the potential headache of having someone mess up your expensive milled key. In order for them to do this, you will need to send a stock key to them for copying. Tracing the cut from a working key rather than code cutting from your VIN is preferred. We recommend cutting the key before programming the immobilizer to prevent unnecessary expense of programming should the key not work properly.

Immobilizer chips:

Newer keys and cars are equipped with "Immobilizers." This feature electronically "matches" a key to a car, making it impossible to start the car without a specific key. There is a small chip in your factory key that communicates with the ignition system telling the car it is OK to turn on. The switchblade key has an immobilizer chip in it, and for some cars (like the 04-08 TSX and 04-06 TL) it can be programmed to match your car by a local Honda or Acura dealer, which can cost as little as $30 or as much as $110, but all dealers set their own prices for this. For other cars (like the RSX or 01-06 MDX) your stock key will need to be cut apart to remove the immobilizer chip so it can be transferred over to the switchblade key. We recommend cutting the key before programming the immobilizer to prevent unnecessary expense should the key not work properly. HeelToe Automotive offers an Immobilizer chip swap as a service option for all keys to save you the cost of needing to get reprogramming done.

Programming the buttons:

This can be done at the same time the immobilizer is programmed at the dealer, or you can perform this action yourself. There is a procedure to follow that we have provided with this document.

What functionality will the FLP Milled key have with my car?

Fitment:

If the key is difficult to turn, DO NOT FORCE IT. Be gentle and smooth with your movement. Sometimes keys need to wear in a little and that can take some time. Be gentle with the key and work with it before resolving to the fact it does not work smoothly.

Factory keys are cast blanks and are all identical. We have made every effort to make sure the machining we do matches the OEM Honda HD103 blank. However there is a certain uncontrollable factor in key cutting that is related to WEAR. Because of wear in the lock cylinders is it impossible for us to guarantee perfect fitment in all locks. During our testing we have noted the following:

- Sometimes you will need to work the key in an out of each cylinder to wear it in.

- Burrs may rise on the key that can prevent smooth operation. Take down any burrs with light sanding.

- Some keys may not fit in some cylinders until they are cut.

- Difficulty turning a cylinder with a cut key may be due to sharp edges. Light sanding can soften edges making the key easier to turn.

- Sometimes keys will work better in one direction that the other. Also, sometimes the keys will require gentle feel or slight jiggling to turn. This is relatively normal for a new key.

- If the operation is not smooth it will likely wear in over time.

- Overloading key rings can put extra pressure on the ignition cylinder that will cause it to wear faster than other lock cylinders on the car.

- Trunk access and glove box locks will not work with a valet key, which is thicker than a normal key. If your key does not work in valet locks then you need to thin the cut faces with light sanding.

Warranty Returns:

We have tested these keys and know they work. We will not be able to accept returns or give credits for keys that have been cut by anyone other than HeelToe Automotive. Returns of uncut keys will be subject to a 20% restocking fee. Returns of cut keys will only be allowed if they have been cut by HeelToe Automotive. In this case, the customer agrees to allow HeelToe Automotive a good faith effort to make the key work. Some cross shipping may be involved which will be split between HeelToe and the customer. If an impasse is reached HeelToe will allow returns for store credit only. All key fitment issues must be reported within 14 days of receipt.

The FLP Milled Key carries a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects from date of purchase. FLP provides NO warranty for damage to lock cylinders in your car. This part is designed to enhance your driving experience. However it will not turn your car into a race car, and will not turn you into a race car driver. Please drive responsibly.

Key Cutting Details

There are a few methods of cutting keys for HD103 blanks and we will outline the 2 recommended methods on this sheet. They are 1- Trace cutting on a manual key cutter and 2-Trace cutting on an automatic key cutter. Cutting by VIN code is possible but not generally recommended for milled keys from FLP.

1- Trace cutting on a manual key cutter.

a. This method is widely used at hardware stores and dealerships. Locksmiths will typically use this method as well. It is fast, easy, and accurate. It takes the actual key you know works in your car and traces the pattern onto a new key. The machine is operated by a professional.

b. There are adjustments to this machine that can impact the final quality of the cut. Because of the risk of variance in keys, we suggest double-checking the adjustments of the machine with keys installed ready to cut prior to turning the machine on.

c. Possible variance in keys requires a slightly altered method of mounting keys than normal. Rather than mounting the blank in the machine to usual depth where the clamp fits over the shoulder, mount the key only up to the shoulder. The original key must be mounted in the same fashion. You will need to use the machine’s alignment indexer to locate the original key at the proper location. Note that the switchblade fob should be angled downward for this first cut. (see Pictures 1 and 2 next page)

d. With the first side cut, it is then possible to flip both keys and index normally against the machine’s stop-blocks (see Picture 3 next page). The fob of the switchblade key may interfere with the machine so it should be held so as not to jam in the equipment.

e. Some light sanding may be needed to fine-tune the fit of the key in the locks. We hesitate to recommend excessive sanding to avoid potential change of the cut.

2- Trace Cutting on an Automated Key Cutter (at the Honda dealer)

a. Honda dealers have an “automatic” key cutter/tracer. This piece of equipment has the benefit of holding the keys in a way that they will not need special mounting. However these machines have been known to make a “bad cut” from time to time. While these machines do a good job of making keys from VIN codes, it is inevitable that some keys cut on these machines will come out not working properly, even when operated and loaded correctly.

Because of the specific nuances that go along with key cutting, and the inherent risk of having a key cut incorrectly, HeelToe Automotive offers a key cutting service. Along with this service, you get insurance against bad cuts. If your key is cut wrong and it cannot be made to work, HeelToe will supply a replacement key.
