Assignment #2: Ad Analysis - Homework For You

Assignment #2: Evaluation

Evaluation arguments set out criteria and then judge something to be good or bad (or better, or best) according to those criteria.

Prompt: Choose a controversial social policy, viewpoint, book, film, album, or event. Then, in a well-constructed essay, evaluate your topic. Explain why you feel that this particular book/movie/album/etc. is good or bad. Consider the criteria something must have to make it good/bad, and then analyze how well the item you are evaluating meets those criteria.

Potential Topics:

• Identify a change that has been proposed in your neighborhood (demolishing a historical building, creating a public garden, closing a local factory, etc.) and discuss whether this change would be good or bad for your neighborhood.

• Discuss a movie that you’ve seen recently, and explain what made it a good/bad movie.

• Discuss a book that you’ve read recently, and explain what made it a good/bad book.

• Discuss an album that you’ve listened to recently, and explain what made it a good/bad album.

• Discuss a local event that you attended recently (fair, festival, charity event, etc.) and explain what made it a good/bad event.

Essay Structure: Your essay should be well-crafted according to the form you learned in Freshman Composition. Specifically, your essay should have an introduction with a hook, thesis, and roadmap; substantial body paragraphs with strong topic sentences and specific examples; and a conclusion that reinforces your thesis and takes the “next step.”

Source Requirement: Your essay must cite at least 4 sources. All sources must be properly documented in APA style using in-text and reference list citation.

Audience: Write to a specific audience. Choose this audience by asking yourself who might be interested to learn about your evaluation of this topic. Be sure to take this audience’s needs into account as you write.

Length: 1,500 words

Tips: See pages 140-141 of Good Reasons for the steps to writing an Evaluation Argument.
