If you're new to the world of smartphones, you'll probably be surprised by how many apps are out there! Most of the apps contained in this booklet have been downloaded and road-tested to a degree. However their inclusion in this booklet is not necessarily an endorsement of them; we are simply letting you know what's out there.

Some tips on finding good apps: It is always advisable to check ratings and reviews before buying an app, particularly the more expensive ones. Bear in mind though, that some customers might have had a negative experience with the app because of issues with their device, network, or limited understanding of the app's function, and then leave an unfavourable review. So while it's wise to check them, they're not always completely reliable.

Many Android apps are not available for all Android devices. However if you search from your device, you will only see apps which are compatible with that device. If you prefer to search from your computer using the Google Play Store (formerly Android market), logging in before searching will ensure that you will be notified as to whether that app is compatible with your device.

Some apps reviewed are from overseas and although they might not be as relevant to all users, it was felt they may be of interest to some. Where the content is exclusively from another country, we have noted this with these icons:

Data usage As part of the description for each app, you will see an indication of the size of the app. This is important information, as the amount you download may be restricted by either your data allowance, or your device's capacity. It is recommended that you download a data usage app as soon as you get a smartphone or tablet; this will assist you in not going over your data allowance. There are data usage apps available for all the main carriers (Telstra, Optus, Vodaphone, & Virgin) in the Google Play store. Another interesting thing to note in relation to data usage is that depending on your device, you may find that you're unable to download apps over 20Mb using your 3G connection ? you must connect to Wifi.

Changes: Apps are continually being updated. Even if you have paid for an app, updates are provided free of charge. As a result of the updates, file sizes, functionality and pricing all fluctuate. The details in this booklet were correct at the time of publishing, but will vary in the future, so please check details carefully before downloading. Similarly, some apps will sometimes be removed from the market for one reason or another.
