GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The purpose of the class is to perform semi-skilled technical and unskilled manual work in the construction, installation, inspection, maintenance and repair of the City’s sanitary sewer system, and to perform related work as required. This class works according to set procedures under close supervision.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Participates as a crew member in the construction / installation of manholes and sewer lines.

Locates and uncovers manholes.

Assists in making sewer taps.

Assists in inspecting sewer mains, manholes, sewer taps, service lines and grease traps for maintenance needs.

Assists with the operation of closed circuit television equipment to inspect sewer lines.

Assists with general maintenance work, including cleaning out manholes and sewer lines, assisting with manhole and service line repairs, locating and repairing sewer leaks, clearing vegetation and debris from right-of-ways, digging and backfilling ditches, etc.

Loads maintenance and construction materials onto / off of trucks.

Maintains accurate and complete work records.

Operates vehicles and heavy equipment such as a TV truck, bobcat, backhoe, front end loader, bush hog, tractor, dump trucks, trailers; operates gas detectors, vacuum equipment, air compressor, pumps, generators, general hand and power tools.

Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.

Works on call on a rotating basis as scheduled.

Receives and responds to inquiries, complaints and requests for assistance in areas of responsibility.

Attends meetings, training, etc., as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills.

DATA INVOLVEMENT:

Requires copying, transcribing, entering or posting data or information.

PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT:

Requires speaking or signaling to people to convey or exchange information of a general nature.

INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS:

Requires leading, operating or repairing complex machinery or equipment that requires extended training and experience, such as video inspection vehicles and equipment, heavy construction equipment, etc.; may involve installation and testing. Involves operations of limited scope.

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

REASONING REQUIREMENTS:

Requires performing semi-routine work following procedures with occasional problems.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires using basic addition and subtraction, such as making change or measuring.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

Requires reading routine sentences, instructions, regulations, procedures or work orders; writing routine sentences and completing routine job forms and incident reports; speaking routine sentences using proper grammar.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires doing clerical, manual or technical tasks prescribed by standard practices but which may require computation, the use of several procedures, and the use of independent judgments with obvious choices; requires normal attention for accurate results.

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:

Requires high school diploma, GED or specialized vocational training.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

Must possess a valid state driver’s license; CDL license is desirable.

Must possess certifications in trenching and excavation, confined space entry, and CPR and First Aid.

Class “D” Collection System certification is desirable.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Requires one year of experience in utility construction, maintenance and repair work.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:

Requires medium work that involves walking, standing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending, reaching, stretching or lifting much of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis, or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:

The job may risk exposure to bright / dim light, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, dusts and pollen, wildlife, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, confined spaces, disease/pathogens, toxic / caustic chemicals, dangerous gases.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, odor perception, color perception, depth perception, texture perception.
