EAST CARTER HIGH SCHOOL

Parents and Students,

The Greenup County School District is working to provide rigorous and accelerated curriculum to challenge our best and brightest students. Part of our efforts have included bringing courses that are usually only available to high school students to the middle school level. This will allow students to earn credits early and then move on to more advanced courses when they enter high school. However, because these courses that are now being offered at the middle school level are graduation requirements for high school, it is essential that the curriculum is delivered in a consistent manner. It is important for parents and students to remember that these courses are on a highly accelerated level and they are not for all students. It is also vital that students demonstrate mastery of the content, so that they can successfully move forward to more advanced classes at GCHS.

Wurtland Middle School addressed the placement process for these courses with our Honors policy that was adopted by our SBDMC last spring. Students must meet data benchmarks on MAP and EXPLORE/ASPIRE assessments to demonstrate readiness and to be placed in these courses. It is also important for parents and students to understand that just because a student is enrolled in a high school credit course and passes with the traditional passing percentages ( 60% or higher) that they still may not receive credit for the course. The three schools (WMS, MMS, and GCHS) have collaborated and agreed upon a set of criteria that must be met by middle school students to earn the high school credit. It is referred to as the 80% rule.

In order for a middle school student to receive credit for a high school course, they must meet the following criteria:

1. The students must have an average of 80% for the 4 nine-week grading periods. (averaged together)

2. The student must have an average of 80% for the common assessments that are given at the end of each 9 weeks. (averaged together)

3. The student must earn a minimum of 80% on the End of Course Assessment that is given by the high school teachers at the end of the school year.

Please keep in mind that even if a students does not meet the 80% rule, they are still benefiting from being challenged with the rigorous curriculum which will help them to demonstrate mastery when the course is retaken in high school. We are very excited to be able to offer these courses to our accelerated students and hope to be able to offer more opportunities for them in the future. If you have any questions concerning the courses and the content that is offered, please feel free to contact the course teacher. If you have any questions regarding the issuing of high school credit for the course, please feel free to contact me at 606-836-1023.

Thank you,

Amanda Powell
