Interprofessional CommunicationCommunication is not only an important skill for a health care professional, but it often has a therapeutic value byitself. Communication is a process that facilitates the transition of information from one person to another, which iswhy it is a powerful instrument that needs mastering. Interprofessional communication, on the other hand, isimportant because it helps set a common, patient-centered, goal and facilitates care coordination and care transition. One way of using interprofessional communication is to set common objectives for the team. In practice, this meansthat several stakeholders work together to determine what should be done and how it should be done. The role ofinterprofessional communication in this process is twofold; on the one hand, each stakeholder expresses their visionof the solution based on their expertise and understanding of the issue, and on the other hand, each stakeholderalso appreciates the opinions of others and sees how they can adapt patient care based on the new data. In the end,the result of a productive interprofessional communication session is a consensus among the stakeholders.Another way in which interprofessional communication is useful is coordinating care. Each stakeholder realizes theirown role in patient care, while it may sometimes be hard for other stakeholders to know how others can help thepatient. Interprofessional communication can help mitigate the gap in understanding. An example would bedeveloping an all-encompassing, holistic care plan as a team, and then later assigning each step of that plan to aparticular stakeholder based on their expertise and scope of practice.Besides applying interprofessional communication strategies in teams, it is also a useful skill in daily practice. This isbecause interprofessional communication extends far beyond the room where the team meets up to discusspatients; it is also how we talk to our peers, our supervisors and subordinates. Efficient interprofessionalcommunication starts when we understand and appreciate the contribution other stakeholders make to patients’care, and can appreciate and communicate our own role in the care plan. The video makes emphasis on several important sub-competencies related to interprofessional communication. They were demonstrated using an interprofessional team meeting with a patient and her family (Health IPE, 2016).This type of inter-professional communication is extremely helpful in my setting. In my clinic, we help patients withopioid use disorder, and to help those patients, interventions are often required on many levels. These patients mayneed psychotherapy, substitution therapy, social and financial support, and each of those is provided by differentpeople. We hold treatment team meetings several times during the day, be it to discuss individual patients situationwith the patient present or with groups of patients in general. Teams of professionals come together in one room orvirtually to discuss each patient to understand their needs holistically to have an immense impact on patients’ qualityof life and treatment outcomes.A recent study of the role of interprofessional communication on care for patients with opioid use disorder by Muzyket al. (2020) also notes that empathy and recognition of personal biases is important in improving interprofessionalcommunication competency. The study shows that recognition of patients’ needs and being able to communicatewith all stakeholders effectively results in a significant rate of compliance to therapy among patients. Therefore, developing personal qualities is not any less important for successful interprofessional communication than the subcompetencies discussed in the video (Health IPE, 2016). ................
