Installing an add-in over a previous version

Installing an add-in (no Solver) over a previous version of an already installed add-in

For add-ins that use Solver, please see the next page

Quit Excel and simply drag the new version into the Excel Add-ins folder.

If you do not know where this folder is, search for add-in’s name (e.g., “DDVGN.xla”) and then drag the new version over the old one.

If you are using Windows XP’s Search feature, you will need to ensure that Windows searches hidden folders by first clicking on the “Use advanced search options” box:

then selecting the More Advanced Options feature:

and finally checking the search hidden files and folders (and subfolders) option:

Of course, you will want to accept rewriting over the previous version.

Installing an add-in that uses Solver over a previous version of an already installed add-in

You cannot simply drag the new version of the add-in over the old one if the add-in uses Solver because add-ins that use Solver have a reference to Solver that is destroyed when the add-in file is deleted. Excel behaves erratically (a variety of different errors messages are produced, including fatal errors that completely crash Excel) unless the Add-in Manager is called (after the add-in has been deleted) and Solver is removed (in step 5) and then Excel is closed (step 6).

If the add-in you are upgrading uses Solver, please follow these steps carefully. Opening and closing Excel is a crucial part of the process. Do not skip any steps.

1) From Excel, use the Add-in Manager to uninstall (uncheck) the add-in.

2) Quit Excel.

3) Find the old add-in on your hard drive and delete it.

4) Open Excel.

5) Use the Add-in Manager (the add-in will not be listed) to uninstall (uncheck) Solver.

6) Quit Excel.

7) Open Excel.

8) Use the Add-in Manager to install (check) Solver. Close (click OK) the Add-in Manager.

9) Open the Add-in Manager again and install the new version by clicking the Browse button and opening the new version of the add-in (clicking Yes when prompted if you want to copy the add-in to the add-ins folder).

Another way to install the new version is to quit Excel (after step 8), place the new version of the add-in in the add-ins folder (from where you deleted the old version), then open Excel and open the Add-in Manager. The new version will once again be listed. Check it and close the Add-in Manager.

If Excel behaves badly, use the Add-in Manager to uninstall (uncheck) all add-ins that use Solver and Solver itself, then Quit Excel. Open Excel and use the Add-in Manager to install Solver, then Quit Excel again. Open Excel and use the Add-in Manager to install the needed add-ins.

The key lies in opening Excel, using the Add-in Manager (uninstalling or installing Solver), quitting Excel, and then opening Excel again. Opening and closing Excel and the Add-in Manager fixes the confusion over the reference to Solver in the add-ins.
