Vast Strides in Education
The development of formal education in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi goes back to the 1960's, but rapid progress in this sector started in 1971, following the declaration of the UAE Federation and the creation of the Ministry of Education and Youth. The ministry had since assumed responsibility for all the stages of public education and, within a short span of time, government schools spread across the nation, the education sector underwent substantial improvements, bringing about an impressive shift in the society's educational profile. Over the past decades, the Government of Abu Dhabi, has paid particular attention to education and adopted plans and strategies designed to develop it to match international standards and support the government's policies and future and future objectives. In implementation of its educational strategy, the Government established schools and universities and provided them with teaching and administrative staff and advanced teaching aids, in order to achieve its goals of building the nation's future generations. Thanks to the attention paid to this sector, education flourished and illiteracy rate retreated from 23.4% in 1995 to 20.7% in 2001, 12.6% in 2005 and 8.3% in 2009.
