Send a message to our editor: jbiterdds@2020 has kicked our butts! Now that the majority of Tennessee General Dentists have returned to work after the initial COVID crisis we are all faced with additional challenges. PPE shortages, employee issues, scheduling demands and the list goes on. We all have stories from the past few months. From my own experience, shortly after on boarding my team with a very detailed return to work letter, I was faced with employee challenges. I have always prided myself as a good employer. Ever mindful and flexible of their personal needs, a good listener, i.e. “door always open” and expecting dedication and hard work in return. Well, now I am a bit tougher. One phrase kept running through my head during our closure “this has to be worth it.” Not only was I dealing with my own anxiety issues, but my team seemed to be as well. With my mind set on not losing any patients, making up for financial loss and meeting the needs of patients, I was thinking my employees had enjoyed a “COVID vacation” and would return to work rested and ready to go. I, on the other hand, had been glued to my tablet and laptop for the month of April, all the while homeschooling my 5 year old while my husband was seen as essential. I re-opened! One week into re-opening we had “personality conflicts” among the team. The next week I had an employee who reported to work wearing a mask telling me (in front of everyone else) she needed to speak with me in private. She felt she was symptomatic of COVID. Even though the “return to work letter” was very specific on CALLING me if you developed symptoms, she felt she should come on in and at least work until lunch before going to get tested. I IMMEDIATELY sent her to get tested. Four nail biting days later her test results came back negative, sigh of relief! After that she explained she would need to be paid for that time off because of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. WHAT?? Where do I turn to figure this out?? I did learn I had to pay her but it would take away from her 14 days of required pay. Although I am a small business the mounds of paperwork seemed daunting to try and fight it. Luckily, I am reimbursed through payroll tax and the CARES act. All the while I was trying to figure out the best way to keep track of my PPP funds so they met the requirement, entering my FEMA PPE order weekly, searching for PPE, trying to get my hygienists to see the need for opening Fridays to see the ever growing list of hygiene patients, and continue to stay abreast of the ever changing news and data coming out regarding COVID-19. Exhausting!!I have a terrific Practice Administrator, Practice Management Coach, accountant and banker so I felt comfort in knowing they were behind me 100%. But I still needed a resource to make sure I was getting accurate information and not spend hours searching the web and scrolling Facebook! I found a great resource in . Everything I needed was there, updated daily! And it was all for ME, the General Dentist! I also found stress relief in conversations with my fellow dentist friends. Thank goodness for them! I found we all felt similar stresses and anxieties. We were all struggling with information overload and shared ideas on how to cope.2020 has been full of curve balls. We are only halfway through the year so no doubt there will be more to come. But we are strong! We are dentists! And, we have AGD to support us!
