Prepositional Phrase Cheat Sheet

1. Prepositional Phrase: Preposition + object (otherwise known as “the object of the preposition”), which can be a Noun or Pronoun

EX.: to the tree (“to” is the preposition, and “tree” is its Noun object)

EX.: to it (“to” is the preposition, and “it” is its Pronoun object)

2. Prepositional Verb: A Verb who needs a particular Preposition to help it makes sense. The preposition is fixed cannot be substituted by any other preposition to make the same sense. And you cannot separate the verb from its preposition. In essence they are glued together.

EX.: He contributed to the office “flower fund.”

***You cannot say: “He contributed for” . . . or “he contributed with” . . . nor can you say, “He contributed the office . . . .” “Contribute” and “to” go together.

Dene’s Cheat for Finding Out It Is Not Introducing a Prepositional Phrase: Try to drop “to” and say the sentence. If you can’t, to is not introducing a prepositional phrase.

3. Phrasal Verb: A Verb that works with a marooned preposition that act like a single verb or sometimes like a single verb + an adverb.

Dene’s Cheat for Determining Difference Between a Prepositional Verb and a Phrasal Verb: If you cannot separate the verb from its preposition, then it is not a Phrasal Verb.

EX.: Prepositional Verb: My mother did not approve of my major.

EX.: Phrasal Verb: We cut the trees down.

4. Prepositional Phrases acting like Adjectives or “Adjectival Prepositional Phrases”

Rule #1 They always follow a noun in the sentence

Rule #2: They act like adjectives (telling which one, what kind, or how many)

EX.: The house beside mine is for sale. (#1 Follows “house;” and #2, tells which one.)

5. Prepositional Phrases acting like Adverbs or Adverbial Prepositional Phrases”

Rule #1 They always relate to the verb in the sentence

Rule #2: They act like adverbs (telling when, where, or how, or in what manner)

Tom shot the gun at the squirrel. (Although the prep phrase is sitting next to a noun, it tells us WHERE the action was focused.
