Guidelines for Level 6 Grammar Professors Cote & MichelOne of the objectives of level 6 grammar is to ensure that students use complex sentences--adjective, adverb, noun clauses-- and their reductions to phrases so that they are well prepared for their writing course and regular English composition. Therefore, all quizzes and exams should reflect these active and productive skills by combining sentences with clauses and reducing clauses to phrases. Multiple choice exams are not suitable for the goals of this course. Be aware that students are placed in courses according to performance on an entrance exam or by having passed previous levels. Some students may not have been in recent attendance. A diagnostic test should be given at the beginning of this course to determine whether the student is adequately prepared or will need to be referred to tutoring services.Recommendations: After finishing the unit on adjective clauses, quiz students. Repeat the procedure for all other units: adverb and noun clauses. Give a comprehensive final exam on combining sentences that contain adjective, adverb, and noun clauses and another section for clause reduction to phrases. Make sure your final also includes Quoted to Reported Speech and If and Wish Clauses. The outline allows for the possibility for review if necessary either in class or with the assigned tutor. Workbook exercises which reinforce the chapters are indicated on the outline for in-class use or assigned homework. This text has an accompanying CD. Professors may also check with the department if they wish to have access to an on-line access code for this series. To facilitate the adjunct instructors' teaching of level 6 Grammar, they will receive supplementary review sheets on all verb tenses, use of the infinitive vs. the gerund, and present vs. past modals. ................
