Independent consultants

Small requirements management and systems engineering teams

Requirements management and systems engineering teams who are not ready to commit to a full scale tool deployment

Students

Academic institutions who wish to equip labs with RM and SE tools

The single-user products are intended for those for whom Cradle Enterprise is not appropriate because it has features that are not needed, because it is

multi-user, or because of its cost. The new products are single-user and have most of the functionality in Cradle Enterprise, which means that they are

the most capable RM and full lifecycle SE tools available.

You can buy these products:

With a Purchase Order

By telephone using a debit or credit card:

Call us in the UK: +44 (0) 1229 838867 to buy in Pounds (GBP), US Dollars (USD) or Euros (EUR)

If you want more details of these exciting new products, then click here and for prices in other currencies, please contact 3SL for details by clicking

here.

Product Characteristics

The main characteristics of the single-user products are:

They are single-user

They are sold with 7 days installation assistance but no technical support and no maintenance agreement

Upgrades to new versions must be purchased

All of the collaborative facilities of Cradle Enterprise are disabled

Since the software in all of the products, including Cradle Enterprise, is identical, any databases created with the new products are immediately usable

by any other product, including Cradle Enterprise

The software in these new products is identical to that in Cradle Enterprise, so the new products are installed in the same way and are used in exactly

the same manner as Cradle Enterprise. It is only the licence encoded in a Security Code that distinguishes these new products from Cradle Enterprise,

which means that upgrading is simply a matter of purchasing appropriate licences, receiving a new Security Code from 3SL and installing it.

Встреча пользователей Колыбели в Санкт-Петербурге

Колыбель - так мягко и приятно переводится на русский язык название профессиональной системы управления требованиями и системного проектирования 3SL

Cradle. Cradle -

You can visit the SATURS website here and their LinkedIn group here.

Want a Free Training Course in the US?

3SL is pleased to advise that we will run a public Cradle training course in our Huntsville AL office in the US between 28th and 30th January 2014. It is

free to attend!

Cradle Group on LinkedIn

LinkedIn (see ) is a popular social networking site for professionals in many disciplines, including systems engineering. Many of you

may already be members of LinkedIn and can attest to the benefits of membership. It is free to join. Once you join, you can create connections to other

people, exchange ideas and messages with them and tell people what you are doing. The more detail you add into your LinkedIn profile, the more

connections LinkedIn can suggest for you.

One of the features of LinkedIn is its user groups. There are thousands of groups in a wide variety of topics. Some groups are open so that anyone can

join them immediately, whilst others will only admit you after approval.

3SL has created a Cradle group on LinkedIn. The group is called: Cradle – RM/SE Tool from 3SL.

We would be delighted if you joined this group. We would also be delighted if you encourage your colleagues to join this group as well! All applications

to the group will be subject to the approval of 3SL.

To find the group on LinkedIn:

Select Groups → Group Directory

Search to find the Cradle group (it is a Corporate group), for example:

[pic]

Click on Join Group next to the Cradle group (not shown above)

The purposes of the Cradle group on LinkedIn are:

To provide a means for 3SL to make announcements to interested people

To allow you to share Cradle-related ideas and experiences with each other

To allow you to suggest ideas to 3SL in a forum that other users can contribute to as well

To allow 3SL to seek opinions from a sample of our users, such as our ideas for new Cradle functionality

The Cradle group on LinkedIn is not a substitute for 3SL Support. That is, we ask that you do not post details of your company-specific and

project-specific questions in this group, but instead continue to contact 3SL Support by any of the usual means, which are:

Contacting your supplier if you did not purchase your Cradle system from 3SL

By e-mail to support@

By logging a support call through our website (for which your login account must be marked as a site representative). To have your login account

upgraded to be a site representative, please send an e-mail to 3SL Support by clicking here, and be sure to tell us your login username

By telephone to either our UK office on: +44 (0) 1229 838867 or our US office on: +1 (1) 256 971 9500

By fax to either our UK office on: +44 (0) 1229 870096 or our US office on: +1 (1) 256 971 9800

We hope that you will join the Cradle group on LinkedIn and help to make it a lively forum for Cradle discussions!

Cradle-6.8.3 Release

3SL is pleased to announce that we released Cradle-6.8.3 on 20th December 2013. This is the latest release of our requirements management and systems

engineering environment and is a minor update to the substantial Cradle-6.8 release in February 2013. The new Cradle-6.8.3 release includes:

An optional extension to the login mechanism so that users must confirm that they have read a user-defined message before they can login. If enabled,

this extension applies to all users in all project databases.

User-defined start pages are now available. Start pages can be customised by each user to meet his/her needs. A start page can also be defined for each

user type. If a user has not specified his/her own start page, then Cradle will automatically use the start page for the user’s user type. If user types

are not being used, then the default start page will be shown.

Query results shown in views can be sorted by the contents of any column. This mechanism has been extended. Previously, clicking on a column heading

would sort the information based on the next of four sort orders. Now, a pop-up menu will appear from which the desired sort order can be chosen.

Considerable improvements have been made to the keyboard shortcuts available to users of Russian keyboards so that, for example, CTRL-C and CTRL-V will

now work as expected.

Cradle-6.8.3 is a full product release with updated documentation. For a complete list of the enhancements and bug fixes grouped by Cradle module,

please consult:

The Cradle-6.8.3 Release Notes

The What’s New link in the online help’s Table of Contents

Database Compatibility

Cradle-6.8.3 is an update release for Cradle-6.8 and so, by definition, it does not include any database format changes from Cradle-6.8. There were

database format changes between Cradle-6.7 and Cradle-6.8 and so if you migrate to Cradle-6.8.3 from a release before Cradle-6.8, such as Cradle-6.7,

6.6, 6.5.1, 6.5, 6.4.1 or 6.4, then you must convert all of your databases to the new format.

Database converters are supplied with this release to perform database conversions from any previous Cradle version into the latest database format.

If you install Cradle-6.8.3 over your existing Cradle installation (that is, you install it in the same directory as your current Cradle system), then

the Cradle-6.8.3 installers will automatically detect which of the converters need to be run, ensuring that your upgrade is as simple as possible.

It is also possible to upgrade to a new release by creating a new Cradle installation with new databases in new directories and using exports and

imports to move data between the databases of the old and new versions. With this approach, you could use the new version and its databases, or you

could revert to the old Cradle version and its databases. These two sets of databases would initially have the same contents, but this would remain true

only for so long as data is not changed in one set that is not also changed in the other.

Customers who adopt this approach use a procedure similar to:

Export data from the databases in the previous release

Install the new release

Create new projects in the new release

Import the data from the export files into the new databases

We always recommend using the database converters that are supplied with Cradle.

Upgrading from Cradle-5.7

Please be advised that in Cradle-6.0 we changed the internal representation of text inside frames, so that it better supports the concept of paragraphs

and is far less based on the concept of text being a list of lines. This means that the database converter for Cradle-6.0, the executable cvt_5760.exe,

performs some text manipulations as part of the database conversion. If you export from Cradle-5.7 and import into Cradle-6.8.3, then these text

manipulations will not occur. You may therefore find a difference between a database conversion and an export followed by an import.

We always recommend using the database converters that are supplied with Cradle.

Must I Install Cradle-6.8.3?

Cradle-6.8.3 is a small update to Cradle-6.8, but both Cradle-6.8.3 and Cradle-6.8 are major improvements over Cradle-6.7 and are a very major

improvement over Cradle-6.6 and previous versions. We would like you to use Cradle-6.8.3 instead of Cradle-6.7 or any earlier version. That is why we

released it!

If you are using Cradle-6.8, then please consult the Cradle-6.8.3 release notes to see if any of the enhancements or bug fixes are relevant to you. If

3SL knows that you need some of the changes in Cradle-6.8.3, for example to be able to perform operations that you have told us are very important to

you, then we will have already advised you to download and install this update.

If you are currently using Cradle-6.5.1 or an earlier version, then we very strongly recommend that you upgrade directly to Cradle-6.8.3 (ignoring

Cradle-6.6 and Cradle-6.7) as Cradle-6.8.3 is a very substantial improvement to Cradle-6.5.1.

3SL will continue to support Cradle-6.4 through Cradle-6.7 until the next major version of Cradle is released.

However, if you are using Cradle-6.3.1 or an earlier release, we urge you to upgrade to Cradle-6.8.3 because:

You will see some dramatic extensions and improvements

3SL no longer supports Cradle-6.3.1 or earlier releases

Mixing Cradle-6.8.3 and Earlier Releases

You cannot mix Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 or Cradle-6.8 with any earlier release of Cradle, but you can combine Cradle-6.8.3,

Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 and Cradle-6.8. This means that if you decide to install Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 or Cradle-6.8 anywhere,

then you must install one of these releases everywhere.

Specifically:

Cradle-6.8.3 servers will work with Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 and Cradle-6.8 clients

Cradle-6.8.2 servers will work with Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 and Cradle-6.8 clients

Cradle-6.8.1 servers will work with Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 and Cradle-6.8 clients

Cradle-6.8 servers will work with Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 and Cradle-6.8 clients

Cradle-6.8.3 clients will work with Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 and Cradle-6.8 servers

Cradle-6.8.2 clients will work with Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 and Cradle-6.8 servers

Cradle-6.8.1 clients will work with Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 and Cradle-6.8 servers

Cradle-6.8 clients will work with Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 and Cradle-6.8 servers

But:

Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 and Cradle-6.8 servers will not respond to Cradle-6.7 or earlier clients

Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 and Cradle-6.8 clients will not be serviced by Cradle-6.7 or earlier clients

These incompatibilities are failsafe. That is, if you accidentally fail to upgrade a client to Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 or Cradle-6.8

from a Cradle-6.7 or earlier release, then starting that client will not adversely affect the operation of Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 or

Cradle-6.8 servers since the Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 and Cradle-6.8 servers will ignore connection attempts from clients of any previous version.

If you have Cradle-6.8 you do not need to upgrade the Cradle server to Cradle-6.8.3. You can leave the server at Cradle-6.8 and upgrade some or all of

your clients to Cradle-6.8.3.

Cradle-6.8.3 Security Codes

Security Codes issued for Cradle-6.8 will work with Cradle-6.8.3. This also means that customers who have purchased any of the single-user, low-cost,

products:

Cradle-RM Desktop, a complete requirements management (RM) solution

Cradle-RM Pro, a complete RM solution with full document publishing

Cradle-SE Desktop, a full-lifecycle systems engineering (SE) solution

Cradle-SE Pro, a full lifecycle SE solution with full document publishing

may download, install and use Cradle-6.8.3, even though the absence of maintenance for such products means that they will not be able to migrate

automatically to the next major release.

Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 and Cradle-6.8 uses different Security Codes to all previous versions. Before you can install Cradle-6.8.3,

Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 or Cradle-6.8, you will need to request a new Security Code.

Cradle-6.8 Security Codes will only be provided to customers who have the multi-user Cradle Enterprise product and an active maintenance agreement with

3SL or one of our partners and distributors. Such customers can also download a temporary Cradle-6.8 Security Code directly from our website. These

codes last for 40 days. For further information, visit the 3SL website, login, and visit the Customer part of the Support area within the site.

Your login account must be set to customer or site representative to be able to get these 40-day Security Codes:

Downloading Cradle-6.8.3

All Cradle-6.8.2 download files for Windows and Linux/UNIX were added to our website and to our mirror site on 20th December 2013.

For Windows, the file to download is the 310,224 KByte (303 MByte) file: Cradle68_Setup.exe

Note that Cradle-6.8.3 is a 32-bit application. It will run on 32-bit and 64-bit Windows platforms, including Vista, 7 and Windows 8, although we will

not officially support Windows 8 until the next major release. However, please note that Cradle-6.8.3 does not support 64-bit versions of Microsoft

Office, and specifically Cradle-6.8.3 does not support 64-bit Office 2010.

For UNIX, you must download the boot and core.Z filesets, and also download the fileset that contains the executable files for your architecture:

linux-ia32.Z for all 32-bit compatible versions and types of Linux

sparcs2.Z for Sun Solaris 2.8 or later on Sparc

So, if you are running on UNIX, you will need to download a minimum of 3 filesets.

If you have a UNIX server that provides executables for multiple architectures, then you will need to download boot, core.Z and the filesets for all

architectures provided by your server.

3SL has a dedicated 20 Mbit/sec Internet connection which means that the largest of these files can be downloaded in 3 minutes. Our mirror site provides

even faster downloads.

You can choose whether to download from the 3SL or mirror servers in our website’s downloads page.

Cradle-6.8.3 Named Users

If your Cradle system is earlier than Cradle-6.8 and includes named user licences, then you will need a new named_users file from 3SL for these named

users in Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 and Cradle-6.8 because the named_users file is also linked to a particular Cradle version. You should

receive this file automatically, but if you do not then please request it from 3SL.

Please note that Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 and Cradle-6.8 are not opportunities for you to change the user names encoded in a named_users

file. You can change these user names either when you renew your Cradle maintenance or if you purchase new Cradle licences.

Supported Platforms

Cradle-6.8.3 supports the following platforms:

All 32-bit and 64-bit versions and types of Linux with a version 2.6.11 or later kernel, which includes:

openSuSE 10, 11 and 12

RedHat Enterprise 5 and 6

CentOS 6

Ubuntu 8, 10, 11 and 12

Fedora 14, 15 and 16

and many others

Sun Solaris 2.8 or later on 32-bit and 64-bit Sparc

Windows:

Windows XP with SP2 or later

Windows 2003 R2 with SP2 or later

Windows Vista with SP1 or later

Windows Server 2008

Windows 7

Cradle is a 32-bit application, but runs on 64-bit machines as all 64-bit platforms provide automatic compatibility support.

On Windows, Cradle-6.8.3 supports the following 32-bit versions of Microsoft Office:

Office 2003 with SP3 or later

Office 2007 with SP1 or later

Office 2010 with SP1

Cradle-6.8.3 does not support any 64-bit version of Microsoft Office.

Cradle-6.8.3 supports all popular web browsers, including Safari for the Apple Mac and browsers on mobile devices, such as the Safari-based web browser

inside Android. If you are using Firefox from Mozilla, we recommend that you upgrade to the latest update of Firefox (currently Firefox 21).

Cradle on Linux

Both the Cradle clients and servers have been supported on Linux for many years. 3SL will continue to provide Cradle on this platform for the foreseeable

future.

Historically, Cradle was supported on any variant of Linux based on a version 2.4 or later kernel. The Cradle-6.8 and later releases require a version

2.6.11 or later kernel because Cradle-6.8 and later releases needs an ability to send messages longer than 4K through pipes that connect parts of the

Cradle Database Server (CDS).

This requirement should not create a problem for anyone using Cradle on Linux, as the version 2.6.11 kernel is now old, and all common Linux

implementations (2006 or later) use kernels that are more recent than version 2.6.11.

A list of popular Linux implementations, and their kernel versions, is shown below:

Rows highlighted in red are Linux implementations that may still be in use which WILL NOT run Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 or Cradle-6.8

Rows highlighted in orange are Linux implementations that may still be in use which MAY NOT run Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 or Cradle-6.8

depending on the patch level of the release

All other rows list Linux implementation that WILL run Cradle-6.8.3, Cradle-6.8.2, Cradle-6.8.1 and Cradle-6.8:

3SL cannot test Cradle on all possible Linux implementations. However, Cradle-6.8.3 has been verified on:

Ubuntu 10.04

RHEL 6.1

CentOS 6

3SL is very confident that Cradle can be used without any problems on all compatible Linux implementations.

There are various methods that you can use to determine the kernel version that you are using. For example, the command:

uname –r

will report the kernel details on many Linux systems. For example, on Ubuntu 10.04.3 the command reports:

2.6.32-24-generic-pae

showing a version 2.6.32 kernel. You can also try:

cat /proc/version

which on Ubuntu 10.04.3 will produce a report such as:

Linux version 2.6.32-24-generic-pae (buildd@palmer) (gcc version 4.4.3 (Ubuntu

4.4.3-4ubuntu5) ) #43-Ubuntu SMP Thu Sep 16 15:30:27 UTC 2010

For Linux distributions based on RedHat, you can use the RedHat package manager, with the command:

rpm -q kernel

You can also try:

|dmesg | grep Linux |

and:

ls /boot

where you can look for filenames starting vmlinux, such as:

vmlinuz-2.6.32-24-generic-pae

which will also indicate the version of the kernel.

If any current user of Cradle on Linux has any questions or problems related to this change, then please do not hesitate to contact 3SL.

Displaying Diagrams in Web Browsers

Cradle can display diagrams in web pages:

By printing a diagram to SVG from WorkBench or from a custom web UI

In the static, hyperlinked, websites produced by the Web Publisher tool

When viewing a diagram in a custom web UI

Cradle renders diagrams using SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics), an XML-based file format developed by the W3C from competing formats submitted by Microsoft

and Macromedia (VML) and Adobe Systems and Sun Microsystems (PGML) in 1998. Microsoft joined the SVG working group in 2010.

Inside diagrams rendered in SVG, Cradle embeds a link in each symbol name that will open the associated data definition or specification for the symbol

and, for those symbols that have them, Cradle also embeds a link in a symbol’s number that opens the lower-level diagram (if any) associated with that

symbol.

Support for SVG in web browsers was originally provided by a plug-in supplied by Adobe Systems. This plug-in is included in the Cradle software

distribution. It is not installed by default. Most modern web browsers now have built-in support for SVG, with the exception of Microsoft’s Internet

Explorer (IE) which only included support for SVG from IE version 9 onwards.

So, to view Cradle diagrams in your web browser:

If you use IE 8 or earlier, install the SVG plug-in from Adobe Systems, also supplied by 3SL

For all other web browsers, SVG diagrams should display automatically

There is a backward compatibility issue that can affect some Firefox users. Users of Firefox from the earliest versions (Firefox 1 or 2) may still be

using configuration files that were initially created by those earliest releases. If so, you may encounter problems displaying SVG.

If you believe that Firefox is not displaying SVG correctly, then:

Open your mimeTypes.rdf file, typically held in:

C:\Documents and Settings\...\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\...\

Search for any definitions that include SVG, such as:

If you find any, delete them

Restart Firefox

Acrobat Compatibility

There are bugs in the Acrobat XI and Acrobat X releases that affect Cradle’s ability to use the DDE interface to PDF documents. Adobe Systems released

version 11 of their Acrobat products on 15th October 2013 and they released the latest version 11.0.03 on 14th May 2013. The original release of version

10 was in November 2010 and version 10.1 was released on 14th June 2011.

In the version 11 release, Adobe Systems introduced a bug in the registry keys for the DDE commands that provide the interface into Acrobat and Acrobat

Reader that applications can use to reference specific pages and sections of documents. The effect of these bugs are that links from Cradle into specific

pages or specific areas in pages in PDF files will not work.

In the version 10 release, Adobe Systems changed the DDE commands that an external application can use, and Cradle does use, to move to a specific

position in a specific page of a PDF document. Unfortunately, errors within Acrobat 10 forced corrections to this new mechanism, which were released as

part of Acrobat 10.1. These bugs affect all applications, including Cradle, using Acrobat to open PDF files.

To accommodate these problems, 3SL recommends:

If you are using any Acrobat X product, then ensure that you have version 10.1 or later. Updates to Acrobat X products are available free-of-charge from

the Adobe website.

If you are using any Acrobat XI product, then contact 3SL for the fixes to the registry keys that you will need to apply before Cradle, or any other

application, will be able to use Acrobat’s published DDE interface. Updates to Acrobat XI products are available free-of-charge from the Adobe website.

Mixed Office Installations

Cradle includes components that are related to, and use the facilities of, Microsoft Office®:

Document Loader that parses Word documents into a Cradle database

Document Publisher that can generate complete Word documents from a database

A SpellChecker that validates the spelling of items in a database

Plug-ins for Word and Excel that can load data into a database

The RTF-to-PowerPoint converter that generates graphical output from Cradle to PowerPoint

Utilities to access elements of Visio files

Utilities to access elements of Project files

Utilities to perform coverage analyses on Word documents

Collectively, these are called the Cradle Toolsuite for Microsoft Office.

3SL has encountered situations where companies have installed parts of different Office versions. For example, where Access 2010 has been added to an

Office 2007 installation. Such mixtures can cause problems for Cradle.

3SL builds variants of the Cradle Toolsuite for Microsoft Office for Office 2003, 2007 and 2010. Each variant uses libraries that are specific to one

version of Office and will only run with that version of Office.

The resulting guidelines are:

You cannot install or uninstall the Cradle Toolsuite for Microsoft Office if you have parts of more than one version of Office (such as Office 2007 and

2010) installed at the same time

If you have a version of Microsoft Office (such as Office 2007) and the corresponding Cradle Toolsuite for Microsoft Office (such as that for Office

2007) installed, then you can add parts of a different version of Office (such as Office 2010), except Word and Excel, and Cradle will continue to work.

But you MUST uninstall these parts of the other version of Office before you try to uninstall the Cradle Toolsuite for Microsoft Office, for example as

part of removing or upgrading Cradle

We appreciate that this is complex and confusing!

Cradle-6.8 has an upgraded installer for the Cradle Toolsuite for Microsoft Office. The new installer detects all of the components of Office that are

installed on your PC. It warns if this combination could cause problems and will prevent an installation if it detects a combination of Office components

that will prevent the Cradle Toolsuite for Microsoft Office working.

If in doubt:

Please do not try to combine parts of different versions of Office

Ask 3SL!

Old Versions of Cradle

3SL’s policy is to actively support the current release of Cradle (and all updates to it) and either the two or three immediately preceding versions of

Cradle (and all of their updates), depending on their release dates. In the future, we will aim to offer support for a release for a minimum of 18

months, increasing to 2 years if possible.

Cradle-6.3, nor any of their updates, nor any preceding release.

Specifically, 3SL regrets to advise that we no longer offer any code fixes or any updates to Cradle-6.3.1 or any previous version of Cradle.

We are aware that some customer sites have not upgraded to Cradle-6.3.1 or later. 3SL will work with these sites to make the transition to Cradle-6.8.2
