How to Use This CD

Contents of the CD

The compact disc that accompanies Ultimate Performance Management contains two types of files. All of the files can be used on a variety of computer platforms.

• Adobe .pdf documents.

• Microsoft PowerPoint presentations (.ppt files). These presentations add interest and depth to many of the training activities included in the book.

Computer Requirements

To read or print the .pdf files on the CD, you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader software installed on your system. The program can be downloaded free of cost from the Adobe website, .

To use or adapt the contents of the Microsoft PowerPoint presentation files on the CD, you must have Microsoft PowerPoint software installed on your system. If you simply want to view the Microsoft PowerPoint documents, you must have an appropriate viewer installed on your system. Microsoft provides various viewers free for downloading from its website, .

Printing from the CD

Text Files

You can print the training materials using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Simply open the .pdf file and print as many copies as you need. The following documents in .pdf format can be directly printed from the CD:

• UPM Handouts

• UPM Learning Activities

• UPM Training Instruments

• UPM Training Tools.

Microsoft PowerPoint Slides

You can print the presentation slides directly from this CD using Microsoft PowerPoint. Simply open the .ppt files and print as many copies as you need. You can also make handouts of the presentations by printing three “slides” per page. These slides will be in color, with design elements embedded. Microsoft PowerPoint also permits you to print these in grayscale or black-and-white, although printing from the overhead masters file will yield better black-and-white representations. Many trainers who use personal computers to project their presentations bring along viewgraphs just in case there are glitches in the system.

Adapting the Microsoft PowerPoint Slides

You can modify or otherwise customize the slides by opening and editing them in the appropriate application. However, you must denote the original source of the material—it is illegal to pass it off as your own work. You may indicate that a document was adapted from Ultimate Performance Management, written by Jeffrey and Linda Russell, and copyrighted by ASTD and Jeffrey and Linda Russell. The files will open as “Read Only,” so you will need to save them onto your hard drive under a different filename before you adapt them.

Showing the Microsoft PowerPoint Presentations

On the CD, the following Microsoft PowerPoint presentations (.ppt) are included:

• UPM PowerPoint Slide_Ch 6

• UPM PowerPoint Slide_Ch 7

• UPM PowerPoint Slide_Ch 8

• UPM PowerPoint Slide_Ch 9

• UPM PowerPoint Slide_Ch 10.

Having the presentations in .ppt format means that it automatically shows full-screen when you double-click on its filename. You also can open Microsoft PowerPoint and launch it from there.

Use your keyboard’s space bar or enter key or mouse clicks to advance through a show. Press the backspace key to back up. Use the escape key to abort a presentation. If you want to blank the screen to black while the group discusses a point, press the B key. Pressing it again restores the show. If you want to blank the screen to a white background, do the same with the W key. Table A–1 in the appendix to the workbook summarizes these instructions.

We strongly recommend that you practice making presentations before using them in training situations. You should be confident that you can cogently expand on the points featured in the presentations and discuss the methods for working through them. If you want to engage your training participants fully (rather than worrying about how to show the next slide), become familiar with this simple technology before you need to use it. A good practice is to insert notes into the Speaker’s Notes feature of the Microsoft PowerPoint program, print them out, and have them in front of you when you present the slides.
