What can you do with Adobe Photoshop and how can it assist you in teaching?

Edit and tailor images for use in or to create:

Games, activities, power points, explanations, worksheets, self-intros, videos, posters.

You can even animate and create web ready content with Photoshop.

Why learn Photoshop?

Knowing Photoshop will give you another tool in your arsenal that will make being an ALT that much easier. Also since the UI in all of Adobes programs are very similar you will have an easier time learning other Adobe programs if you choose to. Photoshop in conjunction with other Adobe software or software in general will make you into a digital creative beast.

Other recommended Adobe programs:

There are many more Adobe programs that I have no experience with but are probably great. These are just the ones I mainly use.

Adobe Illustrator :

for use in Graphic design. Great for creating content for printing. (in our case, things like posters.) More then Photoshop, Illustrator has more customizable and easy to use options in terms of Typography (text) and it also has very useful functions when seeking to create graphic imagery. (vector based software)

Adobe Aftereffects:

Aftereffects is a powerful video editing program that allows you to composite and edit video. This program is great for adding amazing visual effects to pre-existing videos as well as the basics of video editing, as in adding audio and editing timelines.

Adobe Flash (not Flash macromedia player):

Flash is great for creating animations or web content. In flash you can create web content for use on websites, such as interfaces or simple to elaborate animations for various use. (vector based animation software )

Adobe Bridge:

This is a simple Adobe program that makes it easy to manage, access, and organize your files. A few functions are that it allows you to see thumbnails of most of your working files, not just jpgs. and also has a very specific search function.

These lists are just a few things you should learn in order of skill level. These are not at all comprehensives list.

Helpful free tutorial websites.

has extremely thorough tutorials brought to you by professionals. Not free, but the amount of content is amazing and informative. Not only Photoshop tutorials but they have an extensive list of programs that they offer tutorials in. The levels cover the gamut from super beginner to advance. I highly recommend this site.

Quick start guide

1. Find an image you want to use, and save the image to a folder. Save as .Jpg

2. In Photoshop go to file>open> (click on image)

3. After your image appears on screen, look at the layers menu. If for some reason the layers menu is not open, go to (window>Layers) in the layers menu>[pic], In the layers menu, you should see your image like this> [pic] before you can edit your image, you must unlock the layer.

You can do this by double clicking on the layer, then clicking okay on the window that pops up. Then you should see the little lock symbol disappear.> [pic]

4. Now we are ready to edit! Use Photoshops various tools and editing options to change the image as you like. A few options being Layer styles, Blend modes, Image adjust modes, Filters, Image adjustments, transformations etc.. (please watch the demo for a few examples.)

5. To save your image, go to File>save as and save as a .PSD file first. This will keep all your Layers intact so that you may return to the file and edit it. After the PSD file is saved, save once more as a .jpg. The .jpg file will flatten your image into a single layer, creating a smaller and more usable file. As .jpg file your image will be useable with virtually all programs.

Photoshop Actions for instantly beautiful images

What are Photoshop actions?

Photoshop actions are recorded workflows in Photoshop that save you time and energy. Instead of manually repeating the same steps simply click on the Photoshop action button and transform your images. ( An easy way to think of actions is to think of them as those phone app photo editors, but much more advanced. Although this is just one way of using Photoshop actions.)

After I download the Photoshop Actions how do I install and use them?

- After you download the file, in case it's zipped, you must unzip it first. The file will be something like XXXX.atn. Then you must copy that file and paste it on the Photoshop Actions folder: My Computer > Local Disc > Programs > Adobe > Adobe Photoshop > Presets > Photoshop Actions.

- Loading Actions method 1

From here you can simply double click it, and it should now appear in your available actions window within Photoshop. If for some reason it is not in your available actions window, then try method two.

- Loading Actions method 2

In Photoshop you must go to Window > Actions and, on the box where you have your actions, you must press the little button on the right upper corner (not the close button lol) and then choose Load Actions.

- After this is done, you just need to choose the Action you just pasted before and it's ready to use; press Play and see the magic happening on your image.
