How to make a single PDF file from either a Word file or multiple PDFs:

The first set of instructions below assume you are using 1) Word for Mac 2008 or PC 2007 and 2) Adobe Acrobat Pro 9. Acrobat Pro isn't centrally licensed by USC, but is available to buy at the Bookstore ($60/person) and should be available in your research lab. All lab computers in Leavey Library also have Acrobat Pro. The second set of instructions is an alternative way, if you have no access to Adobe Acrobat.

1a. Sign the NEUR490 form and scan it, requesting the output as a PDF file. [PDF file #1]

1b. If you have a digital copy of your signature (this is very useful and can be generated in any drawing program) you can insert it directly into the Word version of the NEUR490 form.

Insert > picture > From file… (find the file on your desktop)

To make a PDF from a Mac Word file of your digitally signed NEUR490 form and the text of your proposal:

File > Print > select the PDF drop down menu to the far left on the Print screen, click on “Save As” and save your file with your desired file name. [PDF file #1]

This process is even easier for Word for PC 2007 and up.

File > Save As > choose the PDF option.

Note: you can circumvent the need for your “real” signature by digitally signing PDF form #1 using Acrobat Pro:

Advanced> Sign & Certify> Sign Document (follow the instructions. Since you will be required to set up password, consider only doing this on your own personal computer).

2. Download your paper as a PDF from the Pubmed website: ()

Note: to access papers in pretty much any journal, you need to use a computer with a USC-based IP address. To begin your citation analyses from off campus, use this URL:

To extract the title page in Adobe Acrobat:

Document > Extract Pages…> extract page 1, click “Extract Pages As Separate Files” [PDF file #2]

3. To make a single PDF file from two PDF files:

Open PDF file #1:

Document > Insert Pages…> select PDF file #2, add to end of PDF file #1.

1. Download your paper as a PDF from the Pubmed website as in step 2 [PDF file #2]

2. Add a PDF file directly to your Word file:

Insert > Picture > From file > select PDF file #2 when prompted, select “page 1” to insert the title page only.

3. Make a PDF from your total Word file as in step 1.
