RE: MONTHLY REPORT NO. 7210401 – February 2008

The following are activities and accomplishments for the month of February 2008:

Recreation Program Highlights

- Peter Bluesten Park was busy during February with several planned activities which included a Groundhog Craft for Groundhog Day on February 1st. The children also learned about the Chinese New Year on February 7th when they made Chinese good luck lanterns and they learned what the Chinese New Year signs are. In addition, the children had fun during their “Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk” Contest on February 11th and they made Valentine’s Day cookies on February 13th. Several adults especially enjoyed the National Bird Feeding Month activity on February 27th when staff showed the participants how to make bird seed bells.

- O.B. Johnson Park was busy for Valentine’s Day when the children made Valentine’s Day cards on February 12th. It was a great turn-out of kids for the “Puppy Love” party on the 14th. Approximately sixty teens participated in the monthly teen dance and talent show on the 15th at Johnson Park. A couple other activities which were also offered at O.B. Johnson Park included Thinking Day on the 22nd and Quiet Day Activities on February 25th.

- Valentine’s Day was celebrated at the Cultural Center when the third annual “Say I Do” vow renewal service was held on February 14th. Several couples participated in a vow renewal, candle and rose ceremonies. In addition, the participants enjoyed the tradition of a first dance, a toast for many more years of happiness and a small reception.

- The Allied Arts Guild opened their art display with an exhibition on February 28th at the Cultural Center. Twenty-six artists are displaying beautiful paintings which will be exhibited until March 27th.

- The Parks and Recreation Department also assisted with several community events this month including the PAL Super Bowl Party on February 3rd, the Future Foundation Love and Jazz Festival on February 16th and the PAL Antique Sale on February 23rd and 24th.

Athletics/Aquatics/Tennis/Scholarship Highlights

Athletics (PAL)

- PAL Youth Soccer continued playing its 2007/2008 season. Games will continue throughout March.

- Youth Track and Field continued registration for the upcoming 2008 season. All children ages 5-18 can participate in this program.

- Youth Baseball began registration for its upcoming 2008 spring season for children 5-15. Games will begin in April.

Aquatics

- Four pool passes were sold in February: 3 Adult Resident and 1 Adult Non-Resident.

- Two adult water fitness passes were sold.

- Despite two cold snaps, over 507 people enjoyed the pool in February.

Tennis (Golden Isles Tennis Complex)

- Seven new members joined the facility in February.

- Over 2,811 members used the facility in February, and 240 non-members.

Scholarships

- One hundred kids attended year-round camp at Bluesten Park in February, an average of 25 campers per week. Of those, 8 attended via scholarship funding.

Other

There were no vehicle accidents in February.
