This will, however involve some other curriculum areas too.Pick and choose during the Topic and Activity time on your schedule. When sending in any examples of your work, please label it with the Activity number. If you find a particular aspect which interests you, feel free to adapt activities and make up some of your own, ideas, art work and investigations.Alongside this we are sending another sheet of activities, to browse and select from. There is LOTS to keep you going. Enjoy and stay safe.Activity 1 ComprehensionWatch: Heart and how it works - duration 1:06 minsRead the text in The Heart comprehension and answer the questions.Activity 2 Diagrams and labelsUse the diagram worksheet provided, or draw and label your own diagram of the heart, using as much information as you are able to identify the different parts. It would be useful to lead into this with Activity 1.You may wish to research further information on the internet, but please do this with your parents’ knowledge and assistance.Activity 3 Non-Chronological writingUsing the knowledge you have so far, write your own Non Chronological text. See below.WritingSelect the most appropriate planning frame for the genre of writing, making note of precise vocabulary.Make a plan to show how they would set out a non-chronological report about the heart. Decide on the information, diagrams and photographs they would like to include and how they will organise their writing for clarity.?NoteEncourage children to consider the headings, subheadings, captions and labels they should use to structure their reports.Activity 4 3D modellingUse plasticine or other modelling materials to sculpt a cross section of the heart, write labels and photograph it.You could use the diagram sheet from Activity 2 to help.Activity 5 Science investigation/Physical activity/MathsPlan an investigation to monitor the heart rates of different members of your family before and after a variety of exercises. First of all find everyone’s resting pulses. It may be easier to time them for 30 seconds when they are relaxed and then multiply by 2 for the full minute result.Make sure that there is a rest break in between activities to allow the heart rate to settle during recovery time.Show your results in a table and perhaps a graph. Use the same labels from your table to label your axis on the graph.Activity 6 Art and DesignUse anything red, (sweet wrappers, foils, felt pens, paint, fabric, fuit juice stains etc.) to create a collage with the title, Blood.Try to include different textures and methods, blow, smudge, mark make etc. It can be a random, abstract piece of art or in the form of a pattern. Get creative.Activity 7 Science – What is blood?Find out about the components and functions of blood by reading suitable non-fiction books, watching animations or talking to a nurse. Describe the function of each of the main components of blood – namely plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.Watch: There are a number of BBC Bitesize clips on this subject. If you happen to have the bits at home you can make your own artificial blood sample using vegetable oil, syrup (with a few drops of red colouring added) and milk. Fill a test tube or vial to about 2 cm deep with the red coloured syrup. Pour in a small amount of milk to a depth of 0.5 cm and add the vegetable oil on the top to a depth of 4 cm. Shake to mix the ingredients and allow to stand. The resulting three layers makes a convincing separated blood sample: the top yellowy layer represents the plasma; the thin, cloudy middle layer, the white blood cells and platelets, and the bottom red layer, the red blood cells. Scientists centrifuge blood samples to separate out these three distinct layers before examining individual layers for diagnosis and research.Activity 8 ResearchWho was the Austrian physician, Karl Landsteiner (1868–1943) and what was his role in distinguishing the main blood groups?Find out about blood donations or speak to an adult in the house who has donated blood.Activity 9 Design TechnologyResearch on line or in recipe books to design a healthy three course meal (starter, main and dessert) Design and make a menu to support your meal and make, bake or cook at least one healthy recipe for your family. The British Heart Foundation offer a number of healthy recipes. Go to their home page and enter recipes into their search panel.Activity 10 Food Packaging Design and Persuasive Language.Look at a range of packaging for foods that claim health benefits, including those promoting low cholesterol, low fat or with added ingredients such as probiotics and fibre. Identify the types of words and phrases used on packaging to encourage or persuade customers to buy these foods, and discuss how effective they feel these are.Can you find persuasive language on the packaging, making claims as to how this is better, healthier, more superior to other brands? How could you package and market a healthy unpackaged food such as apples, bananas or broccoli? Design an advertisement to persuade people to buy it.Activity 11 MusicWrite and perform a rap about the heart and circulations.Take the regular beat of the heart to help keep your rhythm in your performance. What happens if you begin talking about exercise and energy? Does the beat in your rhyme or rap increase? Perform to members of the family and video. Is there a part that they could learn or actions to support your words?Activity 12 Research – PresentationUsing what you have already learned and researching further on the topic of Blood, Heart and Circulation, prepare and perform a short presentation. It might be about the whole process, an aspect of one of the major organs involved, such as blood, heart or the lungs. Make notes and practise. Your presentation should be no more than 3 minutes long. video it, if you are able and forward it to us, if you can. Please note, when you are doing any research on this topic, due to the nature of the diagrams and medical images that you might see, always try to add ‘Key Stage 2’ or ‘for kids’, to your search to reach appropriate content. More importantly though, do any research with the knowledge and preferably in the presence of an adult. We look forward to seeing what you discover. Take care, Mrs Carter and Mr Hall ................
