Manatee Technical College graduates 303

(Bradenton, FL—January 26, 2018)   Manatee Technical College winter 2018 graduates totaled 303. The Main Campus graduated 175 on January 24; the East Campus graduated 128 on January 25. Both ceremonies were held at the MTC Main Campus. Both had two student speakers.

Main Campus graduation

Samantha Stewart, graduating from the automotive collision repair and refinishing program, said “It was a little tough at first, being one of a few girls in the program. But…I found this was the best decision I ever made…I couldn't have gotten the job I have today without it.”

Stewart landed a job at Alex Karras Lincoln in Bradenton. She is the first woman in the history of the company to spray paint cars in their body shop. The 24-year-old Stewart had studied art and design. She said coming to MTC to learn auto collision repair and refinishing allowed her to combine her love of art with her love of cars. Stewart is also a member of the National Technical Honor Society. She hopes to be a role model for other women.

Kelly Rivera Rivera, a 50-year-old licensed realtor and retired U.S. Army veteran, was the second speaker. Graduating from the Administrative Office Specialist program, she earned multiple certifications (Microsoft Office, Accounting I, QuickBooks Pro, and Business Essentials) to enhance her skills.

Rivera thanked her instructor Denise Skivers, “I wish more schools had teachers like you. You care about every students’ future that crosses your path.” She said a quote from Theodore Roosevelt reminded her of Skivers, “Nobody cares what you know until they know how much you care.”

East Campus graduation

Michelle Beettam, CDA, also spoke about setting goals and gratitude for her instructors. Beettam graduated from the dental assisting technology and management applied technology diploma program. She became a Certified Dental Assistant and employed with Hoffman Dental in Sarasota. Earlier this month, Beettam was recognized by the Manatee Dental Society with an Award of Excellence.

Cynthia Perez Perez, CNA, was the second speaker for the East Campus. Perez was graduating from the patient care technician program. She passed the state exam to be a Certified Nurse Assistant last

week. Perez thanked her instructor Susan Elias and reminded her fellow grads that sacrifice and hard work leads to success and that the struggle is worth it: “Nothing worth having comes easy.”

Both graduations

MTC director Dr. Valerie Viands gave the welcome and conferred the graduates. School Board chair Dr. Scott Hopes read the Rudyard Kipling poem “If,” which held special meaning for him. MTC Board of Governors chair John Ziemnicki, shared collected words of wisdom. School District adult career and technical education executive director Doug Wagner recognized the instructors and thanked the families and friends who supported the graduates.

MTC assistant directors Dr. Jennifer Gilray (Main Campus) and Omar Edwards (East Campus) led the Pledge of Allegiance. Graduates Caroline Rosado Gonzalez (Main Campus-Baking & Pastry Arts) and Jessica Rowden (East Campus-Dental Assisting) gave the Invocation.

Counselors Xela Brutus, Roderick Mitchell, Savannah Work (Main Campus) and Amy Gates and Kathleen Matthews (East Campus) called the graduates names for the presentation of diplomas. Assistant director Ellen Sage (West Campus) joined the administration in congratulating the graduates on stage.
