Dr. Ronald Bruce received a B.S. degree at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, and an M.D. degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.  After two years of postgraduate training, he served two years in the U.S. Air Force as a flight medical officer and received the Air Force Commendation Medal.  He received his orthopaedic training at the University of Pittsburgh.

 

Dr. Bruce’s practice years were spent in Rochester. He served as president of Orthopedic Associates of Rochester and a term as president of the medical staff of Highland Hospital.  During his entire practice life he served as Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and in this capacity he taught residents and medical students.  He retired in 1995 and lives in South Carolina.

 

He has three children, six grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.  He and his wife Judy spend the summers at Keuka Lake.

Dr. Bruce is currently on the Board of Directors of the Charleston Area Senior Citizens, a not for profit organization which manages Meals on Wheels and other activities for seniors. He also chairs the Stewardship Committee for the Unitarian Church of Charleston and belongs to Snee Farm Country Club where he plays a lot of golf.

Dr. Jules Cohen attended the University of Rochester for both undergraduate school and medical school. After an internship at Beth Israel Hospital, in Boston, he returned to Strong Memorial Hospital for his residency and a year of postdoctoral training in Hematology. He was a Research Associate for two years at the NIH and then a Special Research Assistant at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London, England, where he received his training in cardiology.

After 13 years on the cardiology faculty at the University of Rochester Medical Center, he served for six years as Physician-in-Chief at Rochester General Hospital. During that time he served on the Board of Directors and Medical Advisory Committee of the Rochester Area Hospitals Corporation, which oversaw Rochester’s innovative Hospital Experimental Payments Program, a community wide, nine hospital effort to manage and control Rochester’s health care costs.

In 1982, he became Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education, and served in that capacity until August 1, 1997. As Senior Associate Dean, he shepherded a major revision of the Medical School Curriculum, and was administratively responsible (through others) for all medical student services and educational programs, and for the medical center’s graduate medical education programs. For seven years, he served as Chair of the 13 Medical School Consortium.

During his years in cardiology, his research involved studies of cardiac hypertrophy, cardiomyopathy, and oxygen transport, supported by grants from the USPHS (NIH) and the American Heart Association. In recent years, his work and research in medical education, and in development of a Health Professions Public Service Program, working with Mrs. Karen C. Pryor (former Associate Dean for Financial Assistance), has been supported by grants from the Macy, Pew, and Robert Wood Johnson Foundations, and USAID. In addition he was coauthor in 2000 with former Dean and VP, Dr. Robert Joynt of a 75 year history of the Medical Center. In addition he co-authored with Dr. Stephanie Brown-Clark a biography of Dr. Paul Yu in 2003, and with Dr. Stephanie Brown-Clark, Dr. Ted Brown, Dr. Diane Morse, and Karen Pryor a historical biography of Drs. John Romano and George Engel in 2010.

Ayala is a first year medical student who matriculated at URMC after a career in elementary education in Manhattan. Ayala graduated from Thomas Edison State College in 2003 after which she obtained a masters degree in social work at the NYU Ehrenkranz School of Social Work in New York City. During this time, Ayala worked with adults and children with mental illness, developmental disabilities and drug and alcohol addiction in both inpatient and outpatient settings and in the process developed a passion for working with the urban underserved. It was during this time that she decided to pursue a career in medicine with the ultimate goal of working to bridge health disparities through primary care and community advocacy. Ayala completed the post baccalaureate premedical program at Columbia University in NYC and taught second grade in a Manhattan elementary school during that time.

In addition to medicine, Ayala has a particular passion for poetry and literature. Ayala has been a finalist in Concordia University’s Summer Literary Seminars three years in a row and has been the recipient of numerous scholarships for literary programs around the world. She was awarded an honorable mention in the William Carlos Williams Poetry Competition in 2014. A native of New York City she has had the privilege of being mentored by a number of poets including Hermine Meinhard and Hillery Stone and has been a regular participant in poetry and fiction workshops.

In her free time, Ayala enjoys bike riding, cinema and the opera. She is honored to serve on the Alumni Council and looks forward to representing the interests and experiences of the URMC medical students.

Dr. C. McCollister “Mac” Evarts is the former Senior Vice President and Vice Provost for Health Affairs at the University of Rochester, and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Rochester Medical Center and Strong Health.

After graduating from the School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1957, Dr. Evarts completed his residency in Orthopaedics at Strong and served as Orthopaedic Chief Resident in 1964. That summer he joined the faculty of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where he would be appointed Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery six years later. Within a decade of completing his orthopaedic residency, Dr. Evarts had published 75 scientific articles and book chapters on a wide range of topics. In 1974 he returned to the University of Rochester to serve as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics. While at Rochester, Dr. Evarts was appointed to the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons, and was named president of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, the American Orthopaedic Association, The Hip Society, and the Association of Orthopaedic Chairs.

In 1987 Dr. Evarts was recruited to the Pennsylvania State University, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, to serve as Chief Executive Officer, Senior Vice President for Health Affairs, and Dean of the College of Medicine. During his tenure he revamped the medical school curriculum; tripled the size of the medical faculty; led the construction of a seven-story, state-of-the-art biomedical research facility; and instituted an M.D.-Ph.D. program to train physician-scientists. These and other initiatives helped to triple the institution’s funding for medical research and boost the number of applicants to the medical school from 2,000 annually to more than 7,000. He became Chair of the Board of Directors of the Association of Academic Health Centers.

In 1997 Dr. Evarts was appointed to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Evarts was named University Professor at Penn State in 2000, and in January 2003 returned to Rochester to serve as Senior Advisor to the Medical Center CEO. In September 2003, University President Thomas H. Jackson appointed Dr. Evarts to the post of Senior Vice President and Vice Provost for Health Affairs, and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Rochester Medical Center and Strong Health.

Recently Dr. Evarts was the recipient of the Albert David Kaiser Medal, Edward Mott Moore Award, John Charnley Award, and the AOA-Zimmer Award for Distinguished Contributions to Orthopaedics.

In August of 2006 he was named Distinguished University Professor and Professor of Orthopaedics.

Paul Fine, M.D., has spent most of his medical career in Rochester. He received his bachelor’s degree with high honors in history and English in 1957 and his M.D. in 1961, both from the University of Rochester. After completing two years as a medical resident, he entered the Air Force and served as a captain. He returned to Rochester for two more years as a fellow in rheumatology.

In 1967 he entered practice, helping to build the Olsan Medical Group. In 1999 the practice moved to the University of Rochester Primary Care Practice Group. He retired from active practice in 2008. Throughout his practice years he has taught medical students and residents in his office and in the hospital. He continues to actively teach Medical Center students.

Dr. Fine has received many teaching awards and honors. He was a Lawrence A. Kohn Senior Teaching Fellow. He received the Clinical Faculty Teaching Award from the Primary Care Program in Internal Medicine. While at the Genesee Hospital he was given the Frederick Anderson Teaching Award. He received the New York State Chapter, Upstate Physician Recognition Award from the American College of Physicians. More recently Dr. Fine was honored by receiving the Jones Stewart Clinical Teaching Award. He also has a named chair in primary care (Paul Fine Professorship) thanks to the generosity of Catherine Colson.

Dr. Fine was a past member of the School of Medicine and Dentistry Alumni Council and the Medical Center Trustees Council. He served on the Board of the Jewish Home of Rochester and was a founding member of Preferred Care’s board.

As the Chairman of Medicine at Unity Hospital, Dr. Haley focuses on providing the best possible health care for all and encourages everyone to embrace high quality, patient-centered care. Dr. Dwight Heron is Professor of Radiation Oncology and Professor of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery, in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Vice Chairman of Clinical Affairs in the Department of Radiation Oncology at UPMC CancerCenter in Pittsburgh, PA. In Dr. Heron’s capacity as the Director of Radiation Services for twenty-one cancer centers in the United States and three centers in Europe, which were developed in a “hub-and-spoke” model, he has spearheaded the development of innovative, evidence-based Clinical Pathways to aid in the coordination and delivery of quality care to all patients throughout the system. These clinical pathways are used for decision-making and treatment implementation. This initiative has harnessed the power of numbers and has allowed the amassing of a wealth of clinical experience and data.

Radiation Oncology - Dr. Heron’s clinical interests include the integration of advanced imaging such as PET/CT and 4D CT in modern radiation treatment planning and delivery. He is the Director of the Head, Neck and Thoracic Radiation Therapy and Director of the Clinical Implementation of Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Ablative Radiation Therapy (SABR) course at UPMC.

Research Interests and Experience:

Development, oversight and supervision of teaching, clinical research and professional development.

Weekly electronic grand rounds: CME accredited program for professional education on the use of advanced radiation therapy planning techniques and evaluation. Participants include residents, post-docs, fellows, staff physicians, nurses, physicists and research scientists.

Twenty-four, state-of-the-art intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) programs with cutting edge technology and development of a database infrastructure which is both retrospective and prospective in nature with an ongoing review of IMRT files at all of our cancer centers.

Seven brachytherapy programs which are located at Magee-Women’s Hospital, UPMC Shadyside Hospital, UPMC Passavant, UPMC St. Margaret Hospital, Latrobe Area Hospital, UPMC Northwest and UPMC/HVHS Beaver and Moon delivering high-end clinical programs to patients in their communities

Kyle graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Neuroscience from Texas Christian University in 2012. While at TCU, Kyle conducted psychoneuroimmunology research under the mentorship of Gary W. Boehm, Ph.D., who pursued his postdoctoral training in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Rochester SMD. Kyle also received a fellowship from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, where he spent six months in an ophthalmology laboratory investigating novel therapeutic targets in diabetic retinopathy.

Following graduation from TCU, Kyle entered the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Rochester SMD, in which he is pursuing both M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. He is currently in the process of choosing a thesis advisor. At the SMD, Kyle has served on the MSTP Student Council and as Administrative Coordinator for the student-run clinic organization, UR Well. He has also worked with other graduate and medical students to establish a predoctoral organization for all graduate and professional students interested in the neurosciences.

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and raised in Houston, Texas, Kyle is the second of four children. In his leisure time, he enjoys cooking, traveling, and spending time with close friends.

Dr. John Markman directs the Translational Pain Research Program in the Department of Neurosurgery and is an Associate Professor at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.  Dr. Markman leads the Department of Neurosurgery's Neuromedicine Pain Management Center, a multi-specialty pain practice with a focus on patients with chronic pain associated with nerve injury. His practice and center offering’s includes the gamut of medical, interventional, and behavioral therapies for chronic pain.  His clinical research on chronic pain and low back pain have recently appeared in Journal of Pain, Pain, Rheumatology, Neurology, Anesthesiology Clinics of North America, Medical Clinics of North America, and Geriatric Clinics of North America in addition to numerous book chapters and non peer-reviewed publications.

Dr. Markman is Chairman of the Pain and Palliative Care Section of the American Academy of Neurology, the guest editor of the recent Continuum Edition on Neuropathic Pain, a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Pain and an examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He also serves as a special government employee of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and a member of the Anesthetic and Life Support Drug Advisory Committee. He lectures internationally and nationally on lumbar stenosis, chronic low back pain, opioid therapy, and neuropathic pain. Dr. Markman is board certified in Neurology and has subspecialty board certification in Pain Management. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology.

Dr. Markman trained in Neurology at The Massachusetts General Hospital and The Brigham and Women’s Hospital. His training in Pain Management was completed in the Department of Anesthesiology at Harvard’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He completed his medical degree at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry where he was awarded the Rudolph Angell Prize, the Robert J. Joynt Prize for Excellence in Clinical Neurology, and a member of AOA.

Dr. Lawrence Nazarian received a B.A. degree from Yale College and an M.D. degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry. After pediatric residency at Strong Memorial Hospital and Yale-New Haven Hospital, he served as a U.S. Army medical officer, then practiced for 35 years at the Panorama Pediatric Group in Rochester, NY, leaving practice in 2004 to expand his role as a medical journal editor.

As Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, he has taught at every level, from the first year of medical school through continuing medical education courses, on the wards, in the classroom, at medical centers around the country, and most often in the office. Currently he serves as preceptor in the Resident Continuity Clinic at Strong Memorial Hospital. He has authored a number of papers resulting from office-based research, as well as articles on practice management techniques and editorials, and has edited a book of 100 challenging clinical cases.

Dr. Nazarian became Associate Editor of Pediatrics in Review in 1990 and Editor-in-Chief in January 2005. He has served on a number of national committees and work groups. Dr. Nazarian has received the Outstanding Clinical Faculty Teaching Award, chosen by the pediatric residents, eight times. In 2002, he received the National Community Pediatric Teaching Award from the Ambulatory Pediatric Association and in 2003 the Gold Medal Award for faculty members at Rochester.

Dr. Nazarian has been active in church activities and with community organizations. In 1999, he received the Friend of Young Children award from the Rochester Association for the Education of Young Children.

He and his wife, Sharon, a retired internal medicine nurse serving as a patient advocate, have two sons and a daughter, three granddaughters, and six grandsons.

Dr. Reh is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Endoscopic Sinus and Skull Base Surgery and Associate Program Director at the Johns Hopkins Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery. He also serves as the Medical Director of the Johns Hopkins Dept. of Otolaryngology satellite location in Baltimore County. Dr. Reh is an active member of the American Rhinologic Society where he serves as a Committee Chair, and is also on the editorial board of the American Journal of Rhniology and Allergy. His practice covers the expanse of sinonasal disorders including sinusitis, nasal polyps, and sinonasal tumors as well as the endoscopic resection of anterior and middle fossa skull base tumors.

Dr. Reh’s clinical interests concentrate on endonasal, endoscopic approaches to skull base tumors and the repair of cerebrospinal fluid leaks. His research focuses on outcomes of endoscopic skull base surgery and intracranial pressure monitoring in patients with spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid leaks. He also collaborates with epidemiologists at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health to investigate the effects of second-hand tobacco smoke on sinusitis.

Kurt Schilling, Ph.D. is currently VP, Assay R&D at Ortho Clinical Diagnostics (OCD), at Johnson & Johnson company, where he leads teams in Rochester, NY and Raritan, NJ involved in the development of medical diagnostic assays and platforms.   Kurt joined Johnson & Johnson in 2005, as VP of Advanced Technologies, Consumer & Personal Products Worldwide, where he built and led a technology incubator.  After that, he crossed over to J&J’s Medical Devices and Diagnostics franchise, OCD, as VP, Business Incubation, to help build their Clinical Innovations group and lead the R&D efforts there.

Prior to joining J&J, Kurt spent 16 years with Unilever where he held various  global R&D leadership positions in Skin, Oral and Hair Care in the US and Europe.  Also while at Unilever, Kurt worked for three years in Corporate Strategy in London on a leadership team that established the company’s new corporate mission, consumer “Vitality, ” as the center of gravity for the company, including building a new franchise, Health and Wellness, in Unilever’s Foods division. His last position before going to J&J was as head of Unilever’s US R&D laboratory in Edgewater, NJ.

Dr. Michael Schneider (Mike) took undergraduate studies in Electrical Engineering and Physiologic Psychology at Princeton University and the University of Rochester, graduating in 1973. He received his MD degree in 1977 from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. His received his Internal Medicine Residency training at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and completed a fellowship in Pulmonary Diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University, in 1982.

He continues a 28 year career in full time Internal Medicine practice presently as a member of the Primary Care Network of the University of Rochester. He is the Administrative Site Director of The Olsan Medical Group, the largest practice group within the University Primary Care Network. He serves as the Chair of the Site Medical Directors Council.

Dr. Schneider has an extensive interest and experience serving physician delivery organizations and non-profit health insurance companies. He currently is President of the Preferred Health Network, a 2800 provider delivery organization serving MVP HealthCare within Rochester, NY. He is a board member of MVP Health Care, the fifth largest health insurer in New York State. He is a current board member of the Monroe County Medical Society.

Dr. Schneider has extensive experience teaching medical students and residents both in the ambulatory and inpatient setting. He has been acknowledged with numerous student and peer rewards for the contributions including the Lawrence Kohn Teaching Fellowship and the University of Rochester Primary Care Program Anderson and Napodano Awards for Excellence in Teaching.

In support of Princeton University, he has taken leadership roles for regional, class and national groups supporting the Princeton alumni body. In 1997, he was recognized with the Jerry Horton Award acknowledging his organizational strategy and proficiency in raising funds to support the Alumni Annual Fund. In 2004, he received the Princeton Alumni Association Award for Volunteer Leadership.

Dr. Schneider is married to Isabel Dowling Schneider, Ed.M., an independent educational consultant, and resides in Rochester, NY. They are the parents of two daughters, Eileen Francis Schneider, an Assistant District Attorney in Kings County (Brooklyn), NY, and Marabel Dowling Schneider, a member of the University of Rochester School of Medicine Class of 2014.

Dr. Jeffrey Stone received a B.S. degree in Cell and Developmental Biology from University of Rochester School of Arts and Science and an M.D. degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He pursued residency training in Surgery and Pathology at University of Vermont before completing a radiology residency at the Ohio State University Medical Center. He then completed fellowship training at University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He then served as clinical faculty at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA for 8 1/2 years before transferring to the Mayo Clinic Florida campus in Jacksonville, FL.

As Associate Professor at both Medical College of Georgia and Mayo Clinic he has taught medical students, residents and fellows of Radiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery and Pain Medicine and held clinical appointments in Radiology, Neurosurgery and most recently Pain Medicine. He has authored over 30 scientific papers and chapters and lectured at over 100 national and international scientific meetings. In addition to chairing multiple administrative committees at Medical College of Georgia he served as President of the Medical Staff from 2006-2007.

He has also served on the leadership of several national medical organizations including President of the American Society of Spine Radiology and Executive Committee of the American Society of Neuroradiology. In 2013, Dr. Stone was inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Radiology (ACR).

Jennifer Lynn Stripay

Jennifer received her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology with a concentration in Neuroscience from The Pennsylvania State University in 2009. Following graduation, she completed two years of independent research at the University of Pittsburgh in the Departments of Surgery and Molecular Biology/Biomedical Genetics. She joined the Neuroscience Graduate Program at the University of Rochester in the fall of 2011 and was the recipient of the Irving L. Spar Award based on “outstanding credentials and the faculty opinion that she has unusual potential for future meritorious contributions in her field”. Jennifer is conducting her thesis research under the mentorship of Dr. Mark Noble, investigating novel therapeutic targets in one of the most common malignant tumors of the central nervous system; glioblastoma multiforme.

In addition to her current position as executive board member for the Graduate Student Society, Jennifer has maintained a commitment to leadership and philanthropy throughout her academic career. She currently serves on the planning committee for the Annual Neuroscience Retreat and helped establish the Neuroscience Graduate Program’s Orientation Bootcamp, a program designed to facilitate the academic and social transition of incoming first year graduate students. As an undergraduate at Penn State, Jennifer was extensively involved in the world’s largest student-run philanthropy, Penn State’s Dance Marathon (THON®), where she rose to the position of chairwoman for her organization and helped coordinate the fundraising of over $42,000 for pediatric cancer research.

Jennifer was born in Naples, Italy and spent most of her childhood in Washington, D.C. before moving to Long Beach Island, New Jersey. Maintaining a passion for the performing arts, Jennifer has spent most of her life training extensively in ballet and contemporary dance. While living in Pittsburgh, Jennifer was a choreographer and instructor for a local dance company. Her experience with the performing arts has significantly contributed to her personal growth and academic discipline.

Humbled by her appointment to the Alumni Council, Jennifer looks forward to working with fellow board members and the administration to foster the development of funding and career development opportunities within the graduate and medical school communities.

Joanne is a staff physician at Unity Spine Center, Unity Health Systems, Rochester, NY. She also serves as an Adjunct Clinical Instructor, Complementary and Alternative Medicine Humanities Seminar Instructor, in the Division of Medical Humanities, Center for Ethics, Humanities and Palliative Care at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

 

She obtained her BS in Biomedical Engineering with focus on Mechanical Engineering in 2002 from University of Rochester after being enrolled in the Rochester Early Medical Scholars program. She is an alumnus of Alpha Phi sorority. She continued her medical training by obtaining her MD from the University of Rochester in 2006 and completed her residency from URMC in June 2010, after serving as Chief Resident.

 

Joanne has served as mentor to many of UR's graduate and medical students throughout her training in Rochester, with focus on serving as a clinical customer in biomedical engineering senior design projects.  She hopes to continue exploring collaborative opportunities between clinical, biomechanical and translational research as she furthers her career in integrative spine and sports care. 

 

In other health related areas, Joanne is an experienced registered yoga teacher (E-RYT), certified holistic health coach (CHHC), and a wellness and fitness consultant for her own company, Fit2bWell Health. In addition, she teaches spinning, pilates, acro and aerial yoga at area health clubs and serves as an ambassador for a variety of community programs. She is passionate to integrate movement into health prescriptions and is currently on collaborating with Rochester companies to create programs to encourage health and wellness amongst its employees to enhance the workforce for our community.
