It should be kept for reference until examination results have been received.Definition of CredentiallingThe process by which an individual nurse is designated as having met established specialist professional nursing practice standards as determined by the COGEN Board of Directors. The Purpose of CredentiallingThe credentialling process:Identifies gastroenterology nurses who have achieved a quality level of practice in their field.Enhances quality patient care through evidence-based practice/research.Demonstrates to the patients, the employer and the wider public a sense of professionalism and accountability in nursing care.Promotes personal satisfaction and a sense of achievement in the credentialed nurse.Examination DevelopmentThe content of the examination has been based on the results of a national task analysis survey. The test questions have been written by a large, representative group of experienced gastroenterology nurses and are relevant to the current practice of gastroenterology nursing in Australia. Each question is referenced and has undergone stringent validation procedures. An external auditing process occurs to analyse the complexity of the questions, frequency of use, appropriateness of the clinical aspects and development of scenario-based formats. From this process, examination pass marks can be determined and adjusted using a Bell Curve to analyse results over a period of time.Continuous upgrading of the question bank and relevant references is a task not undertaken lightly by the COGEN Board and a stringent process is followed.Examination InformationExamination Eligibility RequirementsThe credentialling process is intended to set the minimum standard for the practice of specialty gastroenterology nursing. Registered nurses (Div 1) and Endorsed Enrolled Nurses in Australia and New Zealand, who are employed in the field of acute care gastroenterology, IBD, hepatology and/or assist with endoscopic procedures, are eligible to apply. The same exam will be conducted for both RN and EEN’s as subject matter is relevant to both categories of GE nursing. ** Applicants do not need to be a member of GENCA **Candidates applying for credentialling must have a minimum employment experience in the field of gastroenterology nursing of 3950 hours. An appropriate payroll person or manager at your employment must validate these hours. The field of gastroenterology nursing could include such areas as surgical acute care nursing, Peri-operative/endoscopy settings, IBD, or hepatology. Each candidate must have three (3) Peer Review forms completed. These forms aim to assess the clinical practice and knowledge of the candidate as perceived by their colleagues and managers. They must be completed by a: 1. Nursing manager or DON; 2. Medical colleague/administrator 3. Clinical Nurse consultant/specialist/educator/senior staff member These forms are to be collated and all three returned to the COGEN President prior to the application closing date. It will be the responsibility of the candidate to ensure the prompt return of these documents to the COGEN president. The forms are required to assess that the candidate is working at an appropriate level of advanced clinical practice and knowledge to undertake the examination. The candidate must be able to provide photocopied evidence of current AHPRA registration at the time of submission of the application. In order to credential, the specialist gastroenterology nurse as distinct from the endoscopy nurse, may find there are some questions related to area- specific issues e.g. ward nursing as opposed to endoscopy nursing together with broader nursing issues e.g. Advanced Practice issues and Australian National Standards. This will mean there are some deficits in knowledge for individual nurses, as not all facilities will cover all aspects of the clinical gastroenterology field. It is the responsibility of the candidate to identify these deficits and access appropriate educational resources or facilities who may help with this knowledge deficit.Examination DateThe examination will be held in conjunction with the Australian Gastroenterology Week conference. You will need to allow time for registration at the test site prior to the examination. The examination is usually on the day prior to the start of AGW. It is recommended that you do not fly in for the examination on the same day. Please check with the COGEN President as to the time of the examination prior to booking flights. VenueYou will receive an instruction email within one week prior to the examination date. This will contain the test centre address, location of the examination room, supervisor details and time for registration and all other requirements for presentation to the examination. Please notify the COGEN President, either by phone or email if you have not received this letter one week before the examination.raphouse58@ 0438 567 934 Satellite sites can be provided if unable to attend AGW however, this will not be possible for those candidates who are in the same state as the examination. There will only be one satellite site per state so this may still require some travel.Confirmation Letter/EmailYou will be advised of the receipt of your application once payment and paperwork is confirmed as complete and correct.Examination RegulationsCandidates must bring their confirmation letter 2 black pensOne form of photo identification – e.g. hospital ID or driver’s licenseNo other materials will be allowed into the examination room other than a water bottle or any necessary medications e.g. puffers. Provision will be made for security of personal effects during the examination. Supervision to the bathroom will be maintained. Lollies may be brought into the room provided they are in a lidded plastic container that will not cause any noise when opening and are of a type that will not cause any noise to chew.Examination Pass MarkIt is expected that a nurse sitting for this exam, will possess the knowledge and clinical skills to be able to achieve a pass mark of 73%. This pass mark has been changed after an extensive review of the marks from the previous 3yrs of examinations. This shall be reviewed once again in 3yrs as to the success rate against this slightly reduced mark.Should an EEN sit for this exam, it is deemed that 70% will be the appropriate pass mark.Exam Application ProcedureApplication RequirementsThe completed application forms must be returned to:LYNN RAPLEY83 Clydesdale Street, Wadalba. NSW. 2259Incomplete applications will be returned to the sender. Upon receipt of your completed application, the COGEN President/secretariat will send a letter or email acknowledging such receipt. It is the responsibility of the applicant to distribute the Peer Review forms and ensure that they are promptly recollected or returned to the COGEN President. The COGEN President should receive applications, including the Peer Review Forms, no later than close of business on July 1st. These are only payable after the examination has been completed. This money will be reimbursed by GENCA at the award ceremony during AGW or by mail if you are unable to attend AGW following the exam. The application must be complete and correct before notification will be received to advise of the success in receiving one of these scholarships. If you are resitting the examination from the previous year, and you were provided with a Device Technology educational scholarship, you will be eligible for this if/when you resit. The grant will only cover the cost of your $200 application fee and not the textbook component. If you previously sat for the examination and did not receive this scholarship in the first instance, you will be eligible for it on your next application should this situation occur. Should you receive money from GENCA specifically to cover costs for the examination fee or textbook, the educational scholarship will not available to you. Upon verification of such death to COGEN, a refund will be forwarded to the candidate. In the event of a refund being granted, the examination fee will be returned to the candidate, minus the administration fee of $50.Candidates who, at short notice (within 2wks of examination), wish to withdraw their application to sit the examination may, at the discretion of the COGEN Board, be permitted to hold over their application fee for one year. The administration fee will be deducted from the total fee paid and will be required to be paid again the following year to enable the candidate to sit the examination. Failure to sit the examination at that time will result in the forfeiture of all fees paid.Examination ResultsCandidates will be notified of their examination results by mobile phone on the evening following the examination. Credential DurationThe credential status is valid for 3 (three) years and will expire at the end of the month of August of the relevant year. However, to maintain this status, the ACGEN or ACGEEN must accumulate a minimum of 20 Continuing Professional Development Hours (CPD) per each12 month period starting June 1 to May 31st of the respective years within the credentialed period.
