Level 2 – Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL)



Outcome: Class participants will be able to perform basic activities on the computer, conduct basic internet searches, and perform basic email activities.

Objectives:

- introduce new computer users to computer functions and English language learning resources via the computer and internet;

- build on the skills of experienced computer users in using the computer and accessing resources;

- provide content support to the core classes in the form of computer-related and internet activities that will reinforce learning.

Suggested term plan (times are tentative; many activities will probably slip to next class):

Week 1:

• Orientation to class expectations and objectives 10 min

• Pre-self assessment of knowledge and skills 10 min

• Introduction to computer hardware and vocabulary 15 min

• Introduction to mouse and vocabulary 10 min

• Content activity for experienced users (in place of Mousercise)?

• Logoff procedures and wrap-up 5 min

Week 2:

• Mousercise practice 25 min

• Introduction to keyboard, vocabulary and practice 20 min

• Content activity (for experienced users)?

• Logoff and wrap-up 3 min

Week 3:

• Typing practice

• Mousercise (if needed)

• Content activity/online activity (instructor opens)

• Logoff and wrap-up

Week 4:

• Basic word-processing vocabulary

• Basic word-processing activities (open/close Word; save/open document; spell check)

• Content activity

• Logoff and wrap-up

Week 5:

• Introduction to internet

• Security

• Search internet (Google or go to an ESL site)

• On-line (content related) activity

• Logoff and wrap-up

Week 6:

• Email vocabulary

• Create an email account (hotmail, yahoo)

• Security

• Explore email options, etc.

• Email CALL instructor (use a hotmail/yahoo account) and at least one classmate

• Logoff and wrap-up

Week 7:

• Internet activity (library search)

Week 8:
