We currently have an exciting opening for a Senior Chemist at our Fort Wright, Kentucky Research and Development Laboratory. This position reports to Director of Research and Development – Advanced Technologies. It includes the responsibility of developing emulsions and preparing samples of these for field trials. It also includes scale-up of emulsion technology and assisting in product problem resolution. This position also plays a key role in the development and improvement of polyester and vinyl ester processing. The incumbent has responsibility for projects, which lead to product qualification by the customer and implementation of technology transfer to manufacturing.

Major Responsibilities:

• Participate in laboratory work activities involving polymer development, quality control, materials evaluation, and matching of competitive products.

• Perform all required activities in a manner deemed to be safe and with minimal risk to self and co-workers.

• Respond properly and quickly to inquiries, either directly to the customer, to sales, or to the supervisor, regarding technical problems or matters.

• Make appropriate recommendations to the Director of Research and Development or other appropriate personnel.

• Maintain laboratory facilities in neat and orderly condition to permit maximum employee efficiency and productivity.

• Acquire all skills required to operate laboratory testing equipment, batch making equipment, computer analysis systems, and participate in training programs to assure uniform technical approach.

• Accurate and timely record-keeping, with recommendations for further laboratory efforts.

Required:

• BS/BA Degree in chemistry, polymer or material science, or chemical engineering; an advanced degree is preferred.

• 5 plus years in a Sr. Chemist role.

• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.

• Knowledge and practical experience in project management, experimental design and other problem-solving methodologies.

• Ability to travel.

• Industrial experience.

• Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

• Must be able to pass a Respirator Test.

Preferred:

• Experience with polymer synthesis, characterization of coatings, emulsion-based adhesives, and knowledge of surface science.

• Experience in polymer characterization by physical and chemical methods.

• Knowledge of gel coats, colorants, and thermoset polyesters or vinyl esters.

• Knowledge of fillers and additives used in the formulation of composite materials.

• Experience with infrared, size exclusion chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

• Experience in emulsion development, quality control testing of emulsions, and/or manufacturing experience.

• Mechanical analysis of polymers or composites
