Started at OSU as a Lecturer in the MSE/ Welding Engineering Program and in 2015 accepted an Assistant Professor position. In 2018 was promoted to Associate Professor of Practice. Teaching courses in Resistance Welding, Solid-State Welding, Welding Monitoring and Control, Novel and Hybrid Processes, Welding Processes Lab., and the Capstone Design courses.

Principal Engineer, Technology Leader, Business Development

During 25 years in EWI’s technical division held several positions including Research Engineer, Senior Research Engineer, Principal Engineeer, and Technology Leader of the Resistance and Solid-State Welding processes.

Initiated and managed research projects such as Resistance Spot Welding, Resistance Seam, and Projection Welding, specializing in resistance welding high-strength steels and aluminum alloys. Other major areas of technical expertise include weldability of steels with metallic and nonmetallic coatings and electrode materials.

Responsibilities included establishing new technology areas for R&D within the Resistance Welding group such as high-frequency induction welding and the recently developed magnetic pulse and deformation resistance welding technologies. Considered as an industry expert in tube and pipe production as it relates to the high-frequency welding process.

In the last 4 years as Business Development Manager, was responsible for the consumer and industrial product and automotive markets managing customer relationships with the major OEMs and Tier one suppliers. Additionally, was responsible for technical program development as well as developing market plans and strategies.

Research Engineer

Working in the Research Center on automotive R&D projects related to the joining of new steel products, such as coated materials and tube and pipe material. Also, provided technical assistance to Armco’s customers. In addition, provided assistance to steel production plants in projects such as the development of coil joining procedures and repair of crane runway girders.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE – OSU

Teaching at The Ohio State University (OSU) since Autumn of 2012 in the MSE Welding Engineering Program. Teaching courses in Resistance Welding, Solid-State Welding, Welding Monitoring and Control, Processes Lab, and the Capstone Design courses.

Taught as a guest lecturer at OSU for Solid-State Welding and Resistance Welding courses, lecturing on the subjects of Electromagnetic Pulse Welding, High-Frequency Welding, and Deformation Resistance Welding.

Experience teaching several subjects in Resistance Welding at the OSU Welding Engineering Program while employed at EWI. Taught in place of Dr. Gould, an adjunct OSU professor.

As a graduate student at OSU, taught an Industrial Engineering welding course for non-welding engineering students. This included both laboratory instruction as well as lecturing.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE – OTHER

During the time period of 1995 to 2007, taught several (more than 20) regularly scheduled courses at EWI. These included courses ranging from basic welding principles to advanced technologies and materials. In addition, taught numerous (more than 30) classes/seminars for automotive and light manufacturing companies on topics tailored to the companies’ specific product and technology needs.

Consistently (1990-2010) involved in teaching classes and seminars on Resistance Welding, Welding of High-Strength Steels, and Aluminum Welding that are being offered by SME and AWS to various industries as a continues education units.

Taught for OSU (university contract) the United Association (UA) course in the summer of 2012. This course is to teach the UA welding instructors so they will be able to teach in the UA’s adult educational programs (see attached evaluation).

SERVICE ACTIVITIES – OSU

College committee - serving on the Engineering Undergraduate Honors Committee (UHC)

Department committee - serving as a committee member in the Under Graduate Studies Committee of the Welding Engineering Program.

Department committee - serving as a committee member in the Honors and Awards Committee of the MSE department.

Working with the IUCRC at the MSE Welding Engineering Program to increase industry support and IUCRC membership. Targeting the automotive industry, organized an IUCRC seminar at GM R&D in October 2014.

With same objectives as described above, organized as a technical chair an AWS technical seminar on Welding Dissimilar Materials at OSU in conjunction with the winter (January 2015) IUCRC meeting.

Organized and chaired two additional technical seminars, one on Modeling of Welding Processes (August 2015) at Lehigh University and the other on Welding Advanced Materials (January 2016) in Miami, FL.

Supporting the Women in Engineering Program at the College of Engineering at OSU through lectures and hands-on Lab Sessions in welding where each group of girls design and build a steel structure.

Serve as a committee member in the newly (2015) formed Undergraduate Student Scholarship Committee for MSE and WE.

Participated in the Collage of Engineering outreach program (2016) to area high schools by presenting Capstone welding projects to attract high school students to OSU engineering programs.

Participate in the Alumni Academic Enrichment - OSU/MSE Alumni-Course Matchup with guest speakers to the Capstone classes and the Solid State welding classes.

Technical chair and organizer of the AWS technical seminar on “Welding of Advance Automotive Materials” at OSU in conjunction with the winter (January 2017) IUCRC meeting.

Brought to OSU (by donation to the welding program) new equipment (new RW machine and control) to update the Welding Engineering with state of art equipment. The equipment installation was completed on April 2017 and is being used on projects. The cost of this equipment is around 85K.

COORDINATING AND CO-ADVISING ALL WELDING CAPSTONE PROJECTS WITH INDUSTRY FROM 2013- PRESENT. EACH YEAR THE NUMBER OF INDUSTRY-SPONSORED PROJECTS IS 17-23. ALSO, PERSONALLY ADVISED MORE THAN 60 SENIORS ON 20 PROJECTS IN THE RESISTANCE WELDING FIELD.

Co-adviser with Dr. C. White a PhD student at Michigan Tech. University (MTU) on characterizing electrode wear mechanisms. (See the related publications below)

Starting in April, 2015 to March, 2016 advising Dr. Ji, Postdoctoral fellow at OSU from Dong-Eui University (DEU). His research subjects are Inspection of Resistance Spot Welds and Resistance Spot Welding of Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS). Technical papers were prepared and presented.

Currently co-advising two graduate students in the Welding Engineering Program working on their Master and PhD program. The research conducted is in the area of welding AHSS for automotive applications. Technical papers are being prepared.

CONSULTING

CONSULTANT TO AWS ON THEIR EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR ENGINEERS AND TECHNICIANS AS PART OF THE U.S. INITIATIVE ON MANUFACTURING COMPETITIVENESS. WORK IS IN PROGRESS, TO DEVELOP EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS, AND TO DEVELOP SPECIFIC TRAINING COURSES TO MEET THEM. FOR EXAMPLE, COURSE ON RESISTANCE WELDING OF ADVANCED HIGH STRENGTH AND A COURSE FOR RESISTANCE WELDING TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION WERE PREPARED.

Starting in 2012 to present, consulting to the World Auto Steel (a consortium of all the large steel producers in the world) on Advanced High-Strength Steels (AHSS). Wrote, edited, and published the automotive guidelines for welding these new materials. Training courses for joining these new materials were developed as part of this work.

Consulting work for Nippon Steel on setting-up tube mill process parameters for High Frequency (HF) welding 18Cr–Cb Stainless Steel.

Consulting work (2012-2014) for Ohio Manufacturing Institute (OMI) on 3 projects related to welding of dissimilar materials and Resistance Projection Welding.

Consulting work (2013) for Emerson Materials Technology Center based at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus. Development of Projection Welding process for Emerson China Operations that included the development and delivery of an engineering training course in China.
