D.A.R.E. RESOLUTION
RESOLUTION NO. 88-2013
INTRODUCED BY: COUNCIL AS A WHOLE
A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING “BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH” IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER, 2013, AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY.
WHEREAS, every 74 seconds someone in the world dies from breast cancer; and
WHEREAS, every hour, nearly 30 women in the United States are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer; and
WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer, and is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women worldwide; and
WHEREAS, women are encouraged to get a mammogram every year starting at age 40, and a clinical breast exam at least once every three years starting at age 20, and every year thereafter starting at age 40; and
WHEREAS, through research and advocacy, significant advances have been made in the fight against breast cancer, including an increase in five-year relative survival rates for localized breast cancer from 74 percent to 98 percent; and
WHEREAS, the 2.5 million breast cancer survivors living in the United States today are a testament to courage as well as to the importance of promoting awareness about screening guidelines, and offering treatment to those who are affected; and
WHEREAS, the efforts of various organizations have made a major contribution to spreading breast cancer awareness to both women and men in all communities in Ohio through outreach, education, and screening programs, and have empowered women with the life-saving message of early detection and the importance of having annual mammograms. Now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF OLMSTED FALLS, CUYAHOGA COUNTY, STATE OF OHIO, THAT:
SECTION 1. This Council hereby supports “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” designated for the month of October, 2013.
SECTION 2. The Clerk of Council is hereby directed to forward a true and accurate copy of this Resolution to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, 5005 LBJ Freeway, Suite 250, Dallas, TX 75244.

SECTION 3. The Council finds and determines that all formal actions of this Council relating to the adoption of this Resolution have been taken at open meetings of this Council; and that deliberations of this Council and of its committees, resulting in such formal action, took place in meetings open to the public, in compliance with all statutory requirements including the requirements of Section 121.22 of the Ohio Revised Code.
SECTION 4. This Resolution is hereby declared to be an emergency measure necessary for the immediate preservation of the health, safety and welfare of the residents of the City of Olmsted Falls for the reason that this expression of support is necessary due to the observance talking place in October. Therefore this Resolution shall take effect immediately upon the affirmative vote of not less than five (5) members elected to Council and signature by the Mayor or otherwise at the earliest time allowed by law.
