There are two main types of flea control currently available:
• Insect Growth Regulators (IGR): These products do not kill adult fleas, they only sterilize the eggs so they won’t hatch.
• Adulticides: These products kill adult fleas on the pet, usually within 24 hours of application.
Recommended Products:
• Advantage II -- Monthly topical medication for dogs and cats. Advantage II is an adulticide and IGR. It does not control ticks. It is not recommended for dogs that swim frequently or are bathed more than once monthly.
• Frontline Plus -- Monthly topical medication for dogs and cats. Frontline Plus is an IGR and an adulticide. It provides both flea and tick control. It is recommended if Advantage is not lasting a full month, if the dog swims frequently, or if the dog is bathed frequently.
• Comfortis – Monthly oral medication. Comfortis is an IGR and an adulticide. It does not control ticks.
All topical products should be applied at least 24 hours after bathing since they are dispersed on the skin by the oils in the coat.
