Orientation & Mobility Specialist

Guide Dogs NSW/ACT is the leading provider in Australia of guide dogs and orientation and mobility services for people with vision loss.  We see beyond sight loss by guiding our clients to independence, seeking new ways to prevent blindness and creating connected communities.  

We are currently seeking an Orientation and Mobility Specialist to join our Client Services team in Albury to provide support to people with a vision impairment and focus on delivering Neurological Vision Orientation & Mobility programs. 

Our Orientation and Mobility Specialists work with a committed, multi-disciplinary team and provide:

• low vision assessment and training;

• assessment and training in Orientation and Mobility;

• compensatory training to people affected by stroke or other brain trauma;

• mobility aids including long canes, electronic aids, and Guide Dogs; and

• advocacy and community education on the needs and rights of people with disabilities.

 The successful candidate will have:

• Relevant tertiary qualification in Orientation and Mobility;

• Experience in providing client support and O&M services for individuals and groups;

• A sound understanding of client-centred practice;

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with clients and others;

• Ability to work under direction and to be flexible to adapt to varying workloads and caseload demands;

• Aptitude to work well in a team, as well as independently;

• Excellent time management and organisation skills;

• Attention to detail and skills in analysis, planning and problem solving;

• A current unrestricted drivers licence and good driving record;

• Willingness to obtain Criminal History and Working with Vulnerable People Checks;

• Good skills in utilising computer applications and modern technology; and

• Orientation and Mobility Association Australasia (OMAA) Certification would be ideal.

Training will be provided by our neurological vision speciality practice but previous experience would be an advantage.  Working in a rural area you will also require the energy to drive long distances and occasionally work away from home.
