ASSURE Lesson Plan – Advantage/Disadvantages of Power Point

Analyze Learners

This lesson is directed toward approximately 20 university freshman in a required first year business course. The students are both male and female, approximately 18-19 years old, with diverse learning abilities. They come from various socioeconomic environments and diverse ethnic backgrounds. The students prefer information given to them visually instead of on paper. They like to have a copy of the visual presentation ahead of time.

State Objectives

Without using their notes, the 20 freshman business students will be able to describe 5 of the 6 advantages to using power point as a tool to present information.

Without using their notes, the 20 freshman business students will be able to describe 3 of the 4 disadvantages to using power point as a tool to present information.

Methods, Media and Materials

Method: The teacher will use the following methods:

• Lecture: the teacher will lecture the main topics

• small group discussion: the students will form groups of 4 to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of visual presentations

• presentation: throughout the class the teacher will guide the lesson with a power point presentation

Media: The following media will be used:

• Microsoft Power Point: for the teacher’s presentation

• Flip Chart: to demonstrate a static presentation

Materials: The following will be required for the lesson:

• CPU with Microsoft Power Point installed

• Projector

• Markers

• Flip Chart

• Handouts

Utilize Media and Materials

Preview the Materials: The teacher will preview all power point slides and flip chart diagrams. They will also test the markers to see if they are in working condition.

Prepare the Materials: The teacher will print handouts for the students that correlate with the presentation. She will also prepare lecture notes to guide her through the lesson. Visuals that will be shown during the lesson must be included in the proper section of the lesson.

Prepare the Environment: Due to the dynamics of a lecture hall, all students will be seated in their own seats not at tables. The teacher will supply a laptop computer for her presentation and the room will be equipped with a projector. The teacher will setup the computer and projector before class begins. The lights around the screen will be dimmed so viewing the screen is easier for all students.

Prepare the Learners: The teacher will present an overview of the class lesson and state the required objectives.

Provide the Learning Experience: The teacher will begin with a power point presentation. It will be used throughout the lesson. The teacher will also have a flip chart to record students’ answers. The flip chart will be at the front of the room so all can view it. The writing will be large enough so all can view it too. The handouts will be given to the students at the end of the lesson.

Required Learner Participation

Large Group Activities: The teacher will begin with a question, “Throughout your college experience you will be asked to make many presentations. What do you think the best way to present your information will be?” The teacher will solicit answers from individual students and write them down on the flip chart. Once a variety of answers has been given, the teacher will begin her lecture.

Small Group Activities: After providing a lecture on various ways to present information, different computer programs used to present information, and an overview of Microsoft Power Point, the students will break into groups of 4 to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using Power Point. The groups will pick a spokesperson for their group. The teacher will get the students back together and solicit answers from each group, writing them down on the flip chart. The teacher will then finish her lecture with an overview of the researched advantages and disadvantages of using Power Point.

Evaluate and Revise

Assessment of Learner Achievement: After the lesson is complete a handout will be given to each student. Without their notes, my presentation, or the class flip chart, the students will have to list the advantages and the disadvantages of using Power Point for presenting information. The teacher will also analyze the students’ answers given during large group discussion.

Evaluation of Media and Methods: After the lesson and the student assessment has been completed, the teacher will grade the students’ handouts. The teacher will find an average score and its standard deviation. If the assessment average is below an 80% the teacher will reevaluate her teaching method. The teacher will also evaluate the media used during the lesson. She will need to determine if the media was used effectively or efficiently.

Evaluation of Overall Instruction: The teacher will also answer the questions that the students answer. If the teacher’s answers are overwhelmingly different from the students, the teacher will reevaluate the instructional method.
