?Riley Riehl Dr. Kalberer EDU 401Materials: Standards: ND Business Education Standards: 9.5a.1.6-Explain the importance of an ethical work environment. 9.12c.1.3- Discuss the impact of diversity within the global business environment.9.12c.1.4- Identify the advantages of a diverse workforce.Objectives: The student will be able to explain different ways for resolving communication conflicts.The student can understand and identify the problems that could potentially occur with cross-cultural communication.The student can explain ways to improve communication within an organization.Lesson: Students will be asked to explain off the top of their head examples of conflicts that could be undergone in their job of their career.You will post on the board ways to go about resolving conflicts:Avoidance: Take a neutral position or agree with someone else./Pick your battles/ Make sure it's an important thing to argue promise: Everyone agrees to accept the solution/Everyone involved contributes to the workable solution.Win/lose: No compromise/One wins, one loses/ Most dangerous approach to resolving conflict/ Interfere with achievement of organizational goals.You will explain to the kids that we will be doing scenarios and the class will be in charge of explaining ways to work around the conflict.The ways of resolving conflicts will be left on the board to help with the following scenarios.You will give the class the following scenarios, and ask them to communicate what they think the proper way of going about the situation would be. If applicable, some scenarios might need several students to role play.Chuck listens to music on his computer with headphones on. However, Chuck often ends up going to sleep and snoring which irritates his coworkers. How should Chuck’s coworkers handle the situation?David has to do a presentation at work. There is one member that always makes sarcastic off topic comments after his presentations that the other employees always laugh at. David feels the comments are meant to undermine his authority. The sarcastic coworker has lower rank than David but is not a subordinate and in another department altogether. What should David do?Ernest has absorbed the workload of a fellow worker that was a friend but laid off. Ernest has a lot of questions about the job and could ask his friend for advice. Ernest wants to have coffee with the friend and ask advice but is not sure how to go about this. Ernest also thinks such a meeting might be “rubbing salt into the wound” of his friend. What should Ernest do?Richard has heard some outrageous rumors about his work behavior. Richard thinks he has traced the source of these rumors but is not 100 percent sure if the person he suspects is the culprit. What should Richard do?**If time permits you will begin talking about Cross-Cultural Communication and go through the scenarios with Cross- Cultural conflicts.**Albert is a younger Mexican American worker and standing in line in the company cafeteria. Eddie, and older European American, steps in from of Albert, “I have been here longer and belong in front of the line”. Albert files a complaint with the company and claims this is an example of racism in the workplace. What should management do?Robert’s mother is Hispanic but Robert’s last name is not Hispanic and Robert does not look Hispanic. Robert does consider himself Hispanic. Two of Robert’s coworkers like to make jokes about Hispanics apparently unaware that he is Hispanic. Robert has heard the jokes before and is not that bothered by them but also feels he is being a “race traitor” by not saying anything. What should Robert do?Assessment: The student will be assessed on their engagement within the classroom discussion and scenarios. ................
