They acquire clinical, scientific, decision making and humanistic skills and are exposed to community health nursing, patient education, nursing management and leadership skills essential for today's professional nurse. Some essential features of the programme are:

? The core curriculum focuses on the individual along the Health-Illness Continuum and utilises Maslow's hierarchy of needs to prioritize nursing care and sequence courses from simple to complex.

? Virginia Henderson's theory, which incorporates the unique focus of nursing practice into 14 components, is threaded throughout the programme and forms the framework for the provision of holistic nursing care.

? The Nursing Process, the foundation for nursing practice, is integrated throughout the programme.

? In the first and second years, emphasis is on general education and support courses which enhance students' knowledge of individuals and factors which affect healthy living throughout the stages of development. Third and fourth year courses expose students to common health problems which affect the individual's ability to meet his or her needs.

"Becoming a nurse was not always my dream but [the] nursing school definitely turned it into my passion. I remember in my second semester we had 8 classes and, in one of the clinicals, I witnessed a patient die but in the other one I was able to witness a life be born. That's when it clicked. I was blessed enough to witness the beginning and end of life in a matter of

hours and that

blessing was the

highlight of my

nursing school

experience." Sasha Sutherland, BSc,
