BarrettGrace, mercy, and peace be unto you from our Lord and Savior Jesus ChristWe are amidst another season of national holidays. Memorial Day has passed and the Fourth of July will be here soon. These holidays always prompt a request and some grumbling when I refuse to allow patriotic music during worship. “What does Father Barrett have against patriotic music? Doesn’t he realize something is wrong when we omit patriotic music on a national holiday weekend?”Well, let’s look at this question from the perspective of the church and not our citizenship in a nation. I am as thankful and proud to be an American as anyone. However, I have been called to the office of Word and Sacrament. My most important vow for which I am accountable to you and God, not the President, the Congress, or the American flag, is to be the steward of the gospel for this congregation. There is nothing about good citizenship in my ordination vows. The Church is not an assembly of citizens of a nation extolling their heritage. The promise of the Gospel begins in Gen. 12:3. God told Abraham “in you ALL the families of the earth shall be blessed.” At the conclusion of Mt. this promise is fulfilled when the Risen Lord tells his disciples to preach the gospel to ALL nations and baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 00A message from Fr. Neither America or any other modern nation is mentioned in the Bible as being especially unique or chosen by God. Patriotism is a good thing, but it is not something found in God’s word which I am called to preach and teach. Perhaps you have heard the term “oxymoron.” It means two words spoken together which contradict each other. Two examples are patriotic hymns and patriotic worship. Any song that gives thanks or praise to any nation, even if God is mentioned in the lyrics, is not a hymn. It is a national song of celebration. It belongs at rallies and parades, not in church. There is also no such thing as patriotic worship. The word “worship” comes from the Norse word for “worthy.” In worship we proclaim that God is worthy of our thanks and praise. Even in its best moments, no nation has ever reached the level of deserved praise and thanksgiving reserved for God. Patriotic music in church is not an expression of Christian values. It is worship of a flag or the secular history of a nation. The first commandment says: “You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them.” (Ex. 20:4-5) Declaring anything worthy of worship in church, except God, is idolatry. Therefore I reluctantly allow the singing of one patriotic song AFTER worship ends and our multipurpose is converted from a church sanctuary to a fellowship hall. This makes it clear that America, God, and Jesus are not one and the same. By the way, I wish the assembly sang the hymns of praise to God with as much gusto as we sing “God Bless America.” Let us by all means give thanks and praise this national holiday, but let us do it where it belongs-at parades, picnics, and other celebrations outside the church. The Lord be with you,Father Bill Brothers and Sisters in Christ:The good news is that we will resume public worship on Pentecost Sunday,-May 31st. We will need to adhere to several guidelines from the diocese office. Remember if you have a greater health risk (heart disease, pulmonary, immune suppression, diabetes, recent surgery, cold or recent surgery), you should stay home. Also, do not attend if you feel ill Sunday, have been ill in past 14 days, have a temperature, or have had contact with anyone with these symptoms in the past 14 days.Worship Reopening GuidelinesHand sanitizer will be available in the narthex and should be used before entering the sanctuary.Only one person will be allowed in the restroom at a time. All those in attendance over the age of two must wear face masks. If you do not have a mask or forget your mask, they will be available in the narthex. There will be one, worship at 10:00 which we will continue to broadcast. If attendance looks like it will exceed 50, a second Mass will be munion will continue to be in one kind (host only-no wine)Distribution will be continuous without using the communion railWhen leaving worship, we will dismiss by rows to maintain separationThere will be no passing of the peaceWe will sit using alternate rowsThere will be no coffee hourSurfaces in the sanctuary will be wiped down with sanitizer following worship. The ushers will not pass offering plates.
