State and local authorities in Maryland and the District of Columbia are recommending that "anyone who needs a COVID test" should get one. Active COVID testing is typically conducted by a nasal swab. Antibody testing to determine of a person has already had the virus and recovered is conducted by a blood draw.

Early on, the definition of "need" meant a prioritized person who is experiencing symptoms, has pre-existing conditions, is a front-line responder, or has otherwise been exposed. With additional testing available and a desire of officials to know the full extent of spread, "need" in most cases is now effectively anyone who wants to be tested. While some sites are still reserved for priority cases and require a doctor's order, many sites do not require a person to exhibit symptoms or to first obtain a doctor's order.

In addition to the below-listed public sites that are available as of July 27, various jurisdictions occasionally hold mass testing events where several hundred persons are testing in a single day. Monitor the state and local websites for information on when these events might be scheduled.

Public testing sites are generally free or otherwise covered by insurance, but commercial sites may charge a fee for certain services. Commercial sites include:

Montgomery County

General information and a regularly updated list of active testing sites is available at the county health and human services department website and the testing helpline at 240-777-1755. All County-run testing sites accept persons without a doctor's order. Walk-ups are accepted at most locations, but appointments are recommended. County officials have also stated that if a parish wants to host a testing event, to please call the county testing helpline and provide contact information. A testing operations representative will follow-up.
