Huck Finn Ch - Weebly

Name:____________________________________ Huck Finn Ch. 22

Oelerich English 10

In a well-organized paragraph, evaluate the incident between Boggs and Sherburn, particularly Sherburn’s address to the crowd on pages 131-132, as an example of satire (the use of wit, irony, or sarcasm to criticize society).

Structure:

1. First sentence: Include T.A.G and address the question. i.e. In his satire The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain uses an incident between two characters named Boggs and Sherburn to criticize Southern society for _______x________.

2. Second sentence: Briefly provide some context for the passage you are analyzing. In no more than two sentences explain what happened and to whom.

3. Third sentence: Write a claim including a decisive statement about satire and two pieces of proof that will be explored in your paragraph (this should be ONE sentence!) i.e. Sherburn’s speech satirizes ______x_______ in Southern people by pointing out ________________ and ________________. (List two specific examples from Sherburn’s speech that support the overall criticism. Note what Sherburn SPECIFICALLY observes about his fellow Southerners and/or how they act/react.)

4. Middle of paragraph: Begin with a quotation. i.e. At one point in his address to the crowd Sherburn says, [. . .] Please be sure you are connecting the two examples (only ONE of which need be a quotation) in your claim to the overall criticism. Remember, quotations need to be introduced and explained using analysis verbs; NO ISLANDS! Then connect your examples to the concept of satire: What is ironic about these words coming from Sherburn? How do Huck and the crowd react to his speech?

5. End of Paragraph: Write a clincher that sums up your argument and major points in 1-2 sentences. The clincher should include Twain’s message. Why did he incorporate this incident into his novel? What is this meant to teach the reader about people overall?

This paragraph will count as a 44 point test grade. (See attached rubric)
