Adverb Clauses Consumerism

Adverb Clauses Consumerism

Activity type: Partner Dictation: Story

Level: High Intermediate to Advanced

Purpose: Students practice using adverb clauses in speaking, listening, and writing. They work together to fill in gaps in two short stories.

Set-up: Pairs

Time: 5 minutes to prepare / 20 minutes to do the activity

Materials Preparation: 1. Make one copy of the two-page Student's Page for each pair. 2. Be sure each pair has scissors. Alternatively, you may cut each part of the two Student's Pages in half in advance. 3. Be sure each student has a pen or pencil.

Procedure

1. As a warm-up, copy the following sentence onto the board: Before ___________ last year, I thought about ___________. Tell students to decide what might go in the blanks and to complete the sentence individually. Ask for volunteers to read their sentences aloud. 2. Divide the students into pairs. Designate, or have them decide, who will be Student A and who will be Student B. Tell students they are going to do a dictation activity ? one student will read while the other writes what they hear, then they will switch roles.

Instructor's Page

3. Pass out a two-page Student's Page to each pair. Ask them to cut each page in half (if you have not already done so). Make sure Student A has the complete paragraph for Part 1 and the paragraph with blanks for Part 2; Student B should have the paragraph with blanks for Part 1 and the complete paragraph for Part 2. Tell students not to look at their partner's paragraph.

4. Have students help you model the activity. Ask a Student A to look at Part 1 and read aloud the first sentence of his or her paragraph. Encourage other Student As to follow along. Ask all Student Bs to listen and look at the first sentence on Part 1 of their papers. Have a Student B say what should go in the space (Before moving into my new apartment last year).

5. Tell pairs to begin with Part 1. Student A reads the paragraph aloud. Student B listens and fills in the missing words and phrases. Then tell pairs to complete Part 2, with Student B reading the paragraph and Student A filling in the spaces.

6. Circulate to monitor students' progress. When everyone has finished, check answers by having a Student B volunteer read aloud the completed paragraph in Part 1, and a Student A volunteer read aloud the completed paragraph in Part 2.

Follow-up

Have students use the paragraphs as models to write about a time they moved or about a time they bought something expensive or about a time they hosted a party. Tell them to use five of the following subordinators: after, although, before, even though, in order to, and so that.

Student's Page

Part 1

Student A: Cut this page in half. Give the bottom half to Student B. Then read the paragraph aloud to Student B. Student B will listen and fill in missing information on his or her paper. Read the paragraph aloud again if needed.

Before moving into my new apartment last year, I thought about some of the things I wanted to buy. A 50-inch high-definition TV was at the top of my list. However, having compared prices in several electronics stores, I realized that I couldn't afford such an expensive TV with my salary. A friend advised me to look for a used TV before giving up. He said I might be able to find what I wanted for a much lower price. Although I thought it was a crazy idea, I went to an auction website. The website had a lot of TVs for sale at low prices. I bid on a 50-inch TV that looked great even though the reviews weren't very good. I guess I was lucky that my bid didn't win! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Growing up in a family that had to be careful with money, I learned valuable lessons that still help me today. Even though we didn't have much extra money, our house was always filled with people and laughter. I learned that it's not necessary to have a lot of money in order to celebrate a birthday or a holiday. For me, special occasions aren't about buying gifts ? they're about getting together with people I care about. Since I'm a student now, I always plan potluck parties. After picking the date, I ask my friends to bring some food or drinks to the party to share. Because everyone pitches in, everyone wants the party to be a success ? and it always is! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
