Welcome to 8th Grade AVID! I am very excited to have you as a part of this class. AVID is an academic elective that focuses on preparing students for college and career success. AVID, which is an acronym for Advancement Via Individual Determination, has a wonderful track record of preparing students for college. AVID prepares students for college by focusing on developing skills such as writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading. Because so much of what we do in AVID involves in-class collaboration, distance learning will present a number of challenges. But we will adapt and overcome, and along the way develop grit and perseverance!

Learning Platforms & Technology Resources

1. Google Classroom – Throughout the duration of Distance Learning, all assignments will be assigned and submitted via Google Classroom.

2. Classroom Website – In addition to Google Classroom, students and their parents/guardians should refer to the classroom website to see the daily agenda, calendar, and upcoming assignments. To access the classroom website, please go to Townsend Junior High’s home page at chino.k12.ca.us/Townsend, then click on “Classrooms,” then click on my name, “Brown, Ryan.”

3. Google Meet – All synchronous instruction will take place via Google Meet.

4. Aeries Parent/Student Portal – The Aeries Parent/Student Portal provides parents/guardians and students with instant access to assignments, grades, and overall progress. Parents and students will be able to log on to this website to view grades for each assignment, quiz, and test, as well as the student’s overall grade at any given point in time. Instructions for creating and accessing the Aeries Portal can be found on the district website (chino.k12.ca.us) under the “Parents” tab. Grades will be updated weekly.

Distance Learning Format

• Students will meet synchronously online via Google Meet three times per week. The schedule will be as follows:

o Monday: All periods will meet for 35 minutes

o Tuesday/Thursday: Periods 1, 2, and 3 will conduct online instruction (80-minute periods)

o Wednesday/Friday: Periods 4, 5, and 6 will conduct online instruction (80-minute periods)

• The 80-minute periods will include synchronous instruction and self-paced work. I will be available to provide immediate assistance and answer your questions for the duration of the 80-minute period of instruction.

• Each assignment will have a due date based on its length and complexity. I will provide the due date as I assign each assignment, but it will also be important to pay attention to the due date posted on Google Classroom.

• If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me at Ryan_Brown@chino.k12.ca.us. I will respond as soon as possible, and no later than the next school day. For immediate assistance, please contact me during designated office hours.

Distance Learning Expectations

• Students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.

• Online class participation will be expected. Students should be ready to unmute their microphone to respond to questions and participate in class discussions.

Virtual Office Hours

These are the hours which I will be available, live, on Google Meet, for questions regarding assignments, schedules, and other schoolwork concerns. Find the link for my Virtual Office Hours in our Google Classroom, Classwork page, under the "Communications" heading.

Monday: 12:45pm - 1:30pm

Tuesday: 7:45am - 8:30am

Wednesday: 1:45pm - 2:30pm

Thursday: 7:45am - 8:30am

Grading Policy

During distance learning, we will not be using weighted scoring for grades.

It is a school-wide policy that extra credit will not be given. Students that are organized, work diligently, and are focused in class will succeed without the need for extra credit.

Students and parents need to keep track of student progress on the Aeries Parent Portal. Progress reports are sent home from the school district every six weeks.

The final letter grade is based on the following:

A=90-100% B=80-89% C=70-79% D=60-69% F=0-59%

If at any time your student’s grade falls below 65%, you will be notified via phone, e-mail, mail, or conference.

Work Habits/Effort/Behavior:

O – Outstanding

S – Satisfactory

N – Needs Improvement

U – Unsatisfactory

Academic Honesty

Copying another student’s work (with or without permission), letting a classmate copy, or cheating on an exam is an automatic drop in both work habits and citizenship marks. In addition, academic dishonesty of any type will result in a zero on the assignment. Retaking an exam or recompleting the assignment will be permitted at the instructor’s discretion.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
