[Pages:2]Informal Commands (t?)

Commands are used when ordering, or telling someone to do something. This is often referred to as the "imperative" form of the verb. Remember that Spanish has both a formal and an informal style of speech (t?/Ud.). This distinction applies to commands. Also remember, informal, or familiar, speech is used among friends, coworkers, relatives, or when addressing a child.

The affirmative informal (t?) commands are formed the same way as the present indicative "?l, ella usted" form:

hablar - ar + a = habla

comer - er + e = come

escribir - ir + e = escribe

Be sure to note that the "t?" commands use the "?l" or "ella" form of the present tense, not the "t?" form! The following examples of commands use three regular verbs:

hablar Habla (t?) m?s lentamente. (You) Speak more slowly.

comer Come (t?) la cena. (You) Eat the dinner.

escribir Escribe (t?) la carta. (You) Write the letter.

Remember that hacer, ser, and ir are irregular in the "t?"

command form.

hacer haz ser s?

ir ve

These five verbs have "t?" command forms that are also irregular. For each, take the present tense of the "yo" form and drop the -go ending.

decir salir poner tener venir

"yo" fdoigrmo salgo pongo tengo vengo

"t?" comdmi and

sal pon ten ven
